Nostalgia Inducing - Baldur's Gate 2: Shadow of Amn

in #gaming7 years ago

Baldur's Gate 2 was one of my favourite RPGs when I was younger. The first Baldur's Gate came out in 1998 and struck the gaming industry at that time. Not long after, in the year 2000, Shadow of Amn was released.

The game begins where it finished in the predecessor and our main protagonist gets captured by a powerful mage called Jon Irenicus. When the wizard's lair gets attacked, you escape and seek to diminish his evil plans. Even though the story is pretty straightforward in Shadow of Amn, it's still captivating and it's easy to get involved.

Just like in every RPG, you can customize your character, choose your class as well as sub-class. The game is very user-friendly, although that's understandable because of it's age and simplicity. The NPC's in Shadow of Amn are pretty in-depth as they all have different opinions and thoughts on matters. Since you can bring some companions along your journey, you should choose them wisely, as they can feel hostility towards each other and it can result in unavoidable arguments. Also, the game is incredibly massive.

The characters are noticeably better developed than in the predecessor. They often have a lot to say even outside of combat. In short, there will be lots of conversations and interaction in your party. Though it still remains a question if they will quarrel or bond.

I strongly feel that Baldur's Gate 2 was like a foundation for today's modern RPGs. It may not seem like much and be a little disappointing at certain times, but it's well worth the time invested. It was one of the games I grew up with and it still feels like not a lot of today's RPGs can create the same feeling that Baldur's Gate 2 could. That's just my opinion though. Thanks for reading!

Hey @cheaky I totally agree with you when you said "it still feels like not a lot of today's RPGs can create the same feeling that Baldur's Gate 2 could". I felt The Witcher 2 and 3 (I haven't play The Witcher 1) probably is one of the recent games that are closer to Baldur's Gate (In terms of feel). What do you think?

The Witcher series can relate for sure. We can just take a look at the conversations and the depth of the characters and we can obviously see that both games create an overwhelming atmosphere. There are a few other great choices though, can't say everything is going downhill in terms of rpg games.

Totally agree! Looking forward for more recommendations from you.

Sure, I mostly post about the games i'm interested in :)

Thank you for the review, this definitely brings back memories. There is a remastered version on GOG right now, I might get it and replay the whole series (although BG1 wasn't as good as BG2, which is a classic)
