Garry's Mod just went 64-bit on Windows, and heavy servers should stop crashing
Facepunch dropped the September 2026 update for Garry's Mod yesterday, and the big change is one people have been asking about for years: 64-bit builds.
The Windows game client, the dedicated server, and most of the dev tools including Hammer now have 64-bit versions. You pick the 64-bit client from the Steam launch options. If you have never cared about bit counts in your life, here is why it matters. The old 32-bit build could only address a limited chunk of memory, and Gmod players are not exactly known for restraint. Two hundred addons, a packed sandbox server, a map full of props, and eventually the game just runs out of room and dies. That ceiling is gone now.
There is other stuff in the update too. The Addons menu got a "Downloaded" category, which is a small thing that will save me a lot of scrolling. A Hacked Manhack variant showed up in the spawnmenu. And the Dropship NPC can finally take damage instead of sitting there invulnerable when you spawn it in Sandbox.
I like that this game is still getting real work done. Gmod has been out for ages and nobody would blame Facepunch for just leaving it alone. Instead they went and fixed the thing that made everyone's giant addon collection unstable.
