Lollipop Chainsaw is getting an R-rated movie, and it's a prequel
Dragami Games was at Tokyo Game Show this week and announced a live-action Lollipop Chainsaw movie. Deadline broke the story.
What we know so far is pretty thin. It's a feature film, it's rated R, and it's an action comedy. It's a prequel, so it happens before the 2012 game. Juliet Starling is the lead again. She's the San Romero High cheerleader from a family of zombie hunters who has to fight her way through a zombie outbreak at her school.
That's the whole announcement. No director, no writer, no cast, no release window. There isn't any footage either. So it's a "we are doing this" announcement, not a "here's your trailer" one.
I still like it. Lollipop Chainsaw was never trying to be serious. It's loud and silly and really gory, and the R rating tells me nobody is planning to sand the edges off to chase a bigger audience. That was the part I was actually worried about.
One more thing worth mentioning: Dragami also had Lollipop Chainsaw 2: Back2Back at the show, coming in 2027, with a playable demo on the floor. So the games aren't on hold while the movie gets sorted out.
Game movies have a rough track record. The ones that work usually work because somebody kept the weird parts instead of trimming them, and there are plenty of weird parts here to keep. I'll wait and see who ends up directing before I get excited.
