Review:Hearts of iron IV
I'm sure all gamers here at least have heard of game publisher Paradox. They make very good quality games, mainly historical ones, like Europa Universalis, which is based in the 1400-1800s or Crusader Kings, which is based in the period of Crusades to the Holy land.
Today, let's take one of their games(my personal favorite),Hearts of Iron IV.
Very good game, you can play any of the countries that lived in 1936 and rule them in the WWII period. The base game is 16 dollars now(it's on a sale).
In this game you control everything, but the game itself is military based - it means that you control the army, you control the air force and you control the navy. The diplomatic side of the game is not very good.
There are things called "focus trees" - Sets of focuses your country(you) picks and after 70 days, you get some kind of upgrade, maybe you will get an research time modifier, maybe you will get some manpower to your armed forces.
But not every country has an unique focus tree in the base game - the major powers(UK, USA, France, the Soviets, Germany) does. If you want to have more countries that have a custom, not generic(don't get me wrong, the generic focus tree is pretty good, but it's one sided: to the fascist side) trees, you need to buy a DLC. To anyone who doesn't know what a DLC is, it's a expansion for a game, that you buy and it gives more content. In my opinion, focus trees should be included in your game without any DLCs. It makes the game way more funnier and more interesting to play.
There are two gamemodes to pick: Singleplayer or Multiplayer. I suggest that you start singleplayer when you start playing because in multiplayer others tend to use exploits to win WW2.
The production menu is very simple. You have two types of factories - the civilian factory, that makes all of your constructions happen like roads, forts, airbases and etc., and the military factory - you can assign them to different war aspects, such as tanks, fighters and guns.
The modders of this game are very hardworking and they make very good mods. A very good alternative history modification is called "Kaiserreich". In this alternative history mod the germans have won the WW2 and you can play as them or maybe the loser side, the Entente. As I said, the mod has the focus tree for EVERY country in the game. Why the developers charge for a few focus trees when modders make a mod that has all custom focus trees.
If you don't like the Alternative history you can try out "the road to '56". This mod extends the game's timeline to year 1956.
Follow me! Sorry for not posting for a while.
I had some good times with HOIV... However, IMO the absolute best grand-strategy game is Distant Words: Universe.
