Top 10 SNES Games
Like my last article about the Top 10 NES Games, this is highly subjective, of course. But those are my Top 10 SNES Games of all times, from bottom to top. It was a lot harder than the list of NES games, because all those games are on similar levels of greatness. When you hit the power button of your SNES and the Nintendo logo appears in front of a black background, with the typical 16bit "bling" sound, you know that you will have a great time :)
#10 Starfox / Starwing
This is the game I got with my SNES when i was a kid. For a while, it was my one and only game, but I spent a LOT of time with it (because there was nothing else). If you look at it now, then you just see blocks and triangles and stuff...The gameplay was great, and the music typical for SNES with some heavy base. If you can call it that.
#9 Mega Man X
Mega Man was already great on the NES, and if you are unlucky because you could not get Mega Man X on the SNES (I believe it is not cheap), you can play Mega Man X1, X2, X3 and X4 on the Switch now! Just get the "Mega Man X Legacy Collection", you will not regret it. You are welcome :)
#8 Castlevania 4
The swinging part could be compared to "Bionic Commando" on the NES. Even the controls feel like the same company created both games. But of course that´s not the case (Capcom and Konami). Never tried the Konami code on Castlevania 4, I should do that...If you don´t know what the Konami code is: Well, that´s as bad as not knowing every Turtle by name, including their weapons.
#7 Super Mario Kart
To be honest, I don´t really like it anymore, playing Mario Kart on the Switch is just so much better, even for a retro fan like me. Back than though, it was amazing and it definitely opened the path to all the other great Mario Kart games. It still deserves a place in the Top 10.
#6 Contra III - The Alien Wars
My version of the game is called "Super Probotector", I´ve heard they replaced the soldiers with robots because it was "too violent". Weird times. Anyway, this had a great co-op mode and gun upgrades. It was just a bit too tough for my taste. Did not like the top down levels, without those it would have been in the Top 5 for sure.
#5 Super Turrican
A quite unknown game, i believe. A friend of mine got it for the SNES, I borrowed and loved it. If i could wish for a remake of a SNES game, this would be it. Looks a bit like Contra, but it is single player and somehow more "sophisticated" with the weapons.
#4 Super Mario World 2 - Yoshis Island
Oh boy, I loved the music and the great graphics style. The font in the game could be better, but it fits to the game. This is one of the games where you see how amazing the controls are, in a Nintendo game.
#3 Super Mario World
The cape is what made this game great. Up and down, up and down...it just felt amazing. Super Mario World was rather large compared to earlier Mario Games, and it introduced Yoshi!
If you want to see something disturbing, watch this:
#2 Zelda - A Link to the Past
I don´t even know where to begin with. This was THE Zelda game that caught my interest in Zelda. Forget about the crappy Zelda parts of the NES, this is the real deal. If you want the same feeling, but with some up to date graphics, get Zelda - A Link between Worlds for your 3DS!
#1 Super Metroid
Tough decision between Zelda and Super Metroid, I cannot really tell you why i selected Super Metroid as number one. It was just a gut feeling. Great atmosphere, tough endbosses, an amazing story, incredibly gameplay and controls - with so many additional stuff to achieve. Missiles, Bombs, Wall jumps, ...
So what would be your Top 10? What game is missing for you in the list?
