Metal Eden is simply "Temu Doom"

in #gamingyesterday

Yet another game that I probably wouldn't have heard of if it wasn't for my PS-Plus membership Metal Eden looked like something I might have a chance at enjoying, but the "average reviews" and the 3.5 or so out of 5 that it has on the PS Network were kind of letting me know what I already ended up feeling like after about an hour of playing this.

It's a first person shooter (FPS) with really fast gameplay, a kick ass soundtrack that never stops, and a sort of feeling like the waves of enemies are going to keep coming. You have finishers, multiple weapons, and another ability that you can use so infrequently that it is just annoying that it is part of the combat.

I didn't get far enough in the story for this to be the case, but this special ability is called "Hijack core" and if at some point later in the game it is required in order to defeat something that would be super annoying because it has a rather long cooldown and this becomes even more annoying when things are constantly chasing you and certain trash mobs (that can still hurt you) seem to respawn endlessly until you kill whatever the main baddy in the room happens to be.

combat is fast and furious and you do fly around a lot. You have a bit more mobility than you would in the one game that it seems extremely similar to and that isn't necessarily a good thing. If you were playing on a PC and had the quick look capabilities that a mouse provides, perhaps the experience would have been better but between the flying all over the place, having enemies spawning from all over the place, and the fact hat you have to look around as well as aim with some level of precision makes me feel as though they tried to bite off a bit more than you can chew with this one, especially on a console.

There is also quite a lot of wall-running and this seemed basically directly lifted from Titanfall. I understand that these days it is probably extremely difficult to come up with a truly unique idea, not everyone is going to successfully come up with the newest hot thing or randomly hit it big by doing something crazy like make a dark RPG that centers around fishing, but some games, like this one, seems as though they were just a copy of a copy of a copy.

Everyone loves Doom it seems, but even Doom fans get tired of Doom so when you release a game that is essentially exactly the same thing as Doom but somehow more complicated, it's going to be a tough sell.

I wanted to like this because, and this will make me sound like a gaming pussy, modern Doom games are too tough for me haha.

I kind of enjoyed this for an hour or so, but then I found myself at a certain point where I was struggling with the aiming and movement at the same time and I just kind of got pissed off and said to myself "games are not supposed to be this frustrating, especially not in the first hour."

Parts of it started being rather repetitive too due to lack of enemy variety, and this was very early on in the game. I don't really even feel like I explored the level of weaponry that is available in the game and after 90 minutes or so, I no longer wanted to.

The enemies chasing you are pretty relentless and unless this changes later I didn't feel like your LOS (line of sight) was very good either. This gets even more complicated when you consider that often the enemies could be above or below you and they don't appear to have the same issues that you do as far as tracking is concerned.

While I didn't play long enough to truly know, the AI on the lessor mobs seemed relatively retarded as well. If you had a platform that you can jump to, they just run endlessly into the wall even though there is a ramp on the other side. It's funny until you realize that this is just quite bad programming.

I don't think the difficulty balance is done very well either because they hit you up with some truly tough situations including the need to maneuver around some wall jumps that if mistimed will kill you, all while being fired upon from multiple sides. Apparently you can slow down time to fire easier kind of like a lot of other games and if I am not mistaken this first came into being with Max Payne.

In my opinion as a moderately talented but still casual gamer, this was too complicated and fast-paced to be entertaining, it was just kind of frustrating to play and the fact that it is a near direct ripoff of Doom makes it even more annoying. I already have Doom so if I want to play Doom I will just go ahead and do that.

How was your experience with this title? Do you agree with me? Am I an idiot noob that needs to "git gud?"
