Oddmar: It's entertaining and a good "side gig" for gaming

I've really been focused on Octopath 2 lately but I have found that sometimes I want to have an experience for a little while that is a little less intense and requires very little in the way of strategy.

Oddmar is a game that when you look at any gameplay, it probably is going to remind you a lot of games that came many years before. To me it seemed as though it was very much inspired by Rayman and you only need to play it for a little while to understand that my assessment is correct, it almost plays as if they used the same engine that was used to make Rayman but just changed the graphics a bit.

The story isn't really important just like it isn't important in basically all platformers but in this one you are some sort of Nordic villager who is disgraced because of cowardice or something and now you have to prove yourself to the tribe. Thus begins your jumping and slashing adventure through whatever the hell kingdom this is. It really doesn't matter. The fun is in the actual gameplay, which is simplistic and fun.

You jump, you slash, you collect whatever these triangle things are in order to purchase upgrades. you have time trials on each level if you want to participate in that sort of thing and as I said, it feels exactly like a Rayman experience, which to me is a very welcome experience.

On certain levels you are being pursued by something behind you and you have to move to the right as quickly as possible to avoid getting killed, often to a soundtrack and this is basically exactly the same as certain levels in Rayman Legends. Copying something is a good form of flattery they say, but I would imagine that they had to be somewhat careful to avoid getting sued because honestly, this feels an awful lot like exactly the same game as some of the later Rayman titles.

This isn't a game that you are going to want to spend hours and hours in a row playing though because it does get to be rather repetitive and the near complete absence of a compelling story limits the amount of interest you can possibly have in getting to the next level. As is the case in a lot of games of this sort, there is no "game over", you simply keep on trying over and over again until you eventually get it right. I am on world 3 out of I don't know how many worlds and I haven't faced anything that I can say was particularly difficult... and I am not a skilled gamer at all.

For me, this is something I skip over to every now and then when I feel like the story and strategy of Octopath Traveler 2 is getting a bit intense, or my eyes start hurting from all the readin' I have to do when playing that game.

It's a perfectly fun and simple platformer that is probably going to make you laugh at certain points because again, much like Rayman, it is intentionally silly quite often.

I think part of the reason why this game is so simple is because it appears to have been created primarily for mobile phone gaming and not so much for consoles. I am playing it on Nintendo Switch and it seems almost a bit too easy. Perhaps it would be a bit more challenging if you were tapping on a phone.

This is not available on PC, Xbox, or Playstation, oddly (pun intended) enough.

Go ahead and watch that trailer and tell me that isn't almost exactly like Rayman haha.

This is a really cheap game made by an indie studio so we should support them if we can. I have been enjoying it. It isn't epic or anything like that but it is fun and I have enjoyed the various levels and how they kind of introduce new skills along the way. It's perfectly casual, and that is just fine with me.
