Rapid-fire fail on trying out 3 new games

in #gaming8 hours ago

So since dropping nearly 100 hours into Octopath Traveler 2, watching every word of the credits, and feeling actually a bit emotional about a game so well made and so perfect, I have been really struggling to find something that is going to appeal to me now.

I have Octopath 0, which is the latest version of the game, but I want to at least try some other games before jumping back in.

Yesterday I tried, and rapidly failed, at garnering some interest in 3 consecutive games.

Fail 1: Celeste

This highly rated metroidvania game is basically "loved by everyone" and all the reviews say it is the best things since sliced bread. Well, I disagree.

For one thing is is really hard and I don't like really hard games. You die, a lot and that is kind of what is supposed to happen. If you've heard of Super Meat Boy that is what this is kind of like. You have to make super precise jumps to get through these rooms and tiny mistakes result in your death. This was already something that was jamakin me crazy in the first 20 minutes of playing it. So I bailed on that.

Fail 2: Carrion

This one I may actually come back to. In this you are the bad guy or the monster that is contained inside of a facility and your objective is to break out and kill all the scientists. I was a bit drunk when I tried to play this and that might have been a factor. While gameplay was funny I found the controls a bit janky and non-responsive when in reality it may have actually been me that was non-responsive. But regardless, it failed the test and I moved on after about 30 mins to 1 hour.

Fail 3: Trinity Fusion

This game seemed really cool because its graphically beautiful and the sound and music was amazing. There are three big reasons why I gave up on this though. You run out of ammo for your ranged attacks WAY too quickly, the game is heavily leaning towards dodging attacks as a matter of survival (hate that almost as much as parrying!) and the biggest reason why I bailed on this is because I could tell very early on that it was a rogue-like.

It is very tough to sell me a rogue-like game and the only one I have ever truly enjoyed was Hades and even with that one I think I am "trying to like it" more than I actually did.

So with those 3 behind me and Carrion being the only one I have any intention of ever playing again I am kind of where I started. I have sever Dragon Quest remasters as well as Xenoblade Chronicles already loaded up, and I suppose I will try those next.

By the way, the reason that I am able to play so many games is because I jailbreaked my Switch but know this: I am the kind of person that if I like a game I pay for it even if I don't have to.
