Gender neutral ,80’s/90’s revisited

My mother divorced my father back in good ol 87. And every Father’s Day she would get upset with me if I didn’t buy her a father days gift . This went on for years ,so in a sense ,gender neutrality has been around for some time .so why is it so shocking ?????
