Daily Field Notes #160
"Read, read, read. Read everything -- trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it. Then write. If it's good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out of the window." ~ William Faulkner
How nice that you made it to this Daily Field Note! It is already the 160th edition where we put great posts from the last day(s) in the spotlight. This way you can easily find articles worth reading and authors get more of the exposure they deserve
Geopolis is a community that promotes and connects people who are interested in fields of "global" sciences. These are the sciences that deal with planet earth and the interesting interactions taking place on it. Although just as fascinating, they do not always fit in the categories of "STEM". Here at Geopolis they are the corner stone of the community.
How to get your post in this selection? You do not have to be a member for your post to get featured in the Daily Field Notes. Just write your post with the #geopolis tag, or one of the other featured tags: #Geography - #Geology - #Ecology - #Archeology - #Anthropology - #History
Geology: Drone Photo Science Friday - Exploring Natural Marble Caves and Rocks! (plus a bit of art)
Ah, Marble! You mean so many things to so many people. This post takes us to Patagonia to look at Marble rocks and some cool caves all shot from a drone.
Today we are going to look at some original drone photos of marble and talk about marble, the rock, not the toy (hence the #steemstem). There will be a bit of discussion about solution weathering and a number of original photos using technology (i.e. a drone) to show things from a different perspective.
Ecology: Bugs in the news: Corn snot helping end hunger and pollution
Believe it or not, there's no need for a nsfw tag. What you're looking at is a very special corn root. In fact, it's so special, it took researchers over 8 years to be sure about what they were looking at. These roots aren't in soil, are covered with a hefty helping of slime, and host a thriving community of very special microbes.

Archeology: You Don't Want To Disturb A 17th-Century Skeleton?
Original post by @liquidtravel
It was just past midnight when I bolted upright in bed because of the sounds coming from the heavy rain, wind, and waves slamming against the wall of the metal office building where I was sleeping. I was a little disoriented at first and it took a couple of minutes to make sense of my surroundings. I was the assistant director on a project using a cofferdam to create a hole to the seafloor so a team of archaeologists could excavate a 17th-century shipwreck, and tonight it was my turn to stand guard. The cofferdam was built to isolate the site from the surrounding water and then using pumps, remove the water from the inside so the team could excavate in the open air instead of underwate...
