Some of the best magic tricks involve a little 'risk'. There's a chance you will get caught... Even if you're an expert magician, the real world has too many factors for anyone to control. No matter what you do, you will always run a small risk of getting caught doing a magic trick. How do magicians prepare for this?
I've found some of the best advice on the subject comes from pickpockets. These guys deal with one of the highest risk activities in magic.. they invade a spectators personal space and steal (for entertainment) things.. Basically, these guys HAVE to get used to being caught out, and learn how to deal with that. I asked Ravi Mayar (one of the UK's busiest close up magicians and pickpockets) to give you one of his training techniques:
The practice technique Ravi recommends is pretty 'out there' but it really works. I used a similar principle when learning the watch steal, and I know this really will give you brilliant results.
Getting caught doing a magic trick sucks, but it will happen sooner or later if you perform for the public close-up. You need to keep your cool, stay relaxed, and remain focused. If you do that you become unflappable and can turn anything around, use an out, or simply laugh it off with the group.
