From a scientific standpoint energy of any kind can be transferred. so if you give happiness (positive energy) to another person, this will create a pattern. Even though you have given away your energy you will surely receive (but you must pay attention). If all energy is relative than surely it can be recycled. it can be transform to another for of life force energy and it will come back to you.
When the energy come back to you, it is important that you recognize the energy you have given away. this will follow into the pattern.
