Investment, Speculation or Cost - You Need to Know the Difference

I’ve been investing and speculating in the real estate and stock markets for longer than I’d like to admit. It seems like yesterday, when I did my first wholesale transaction in real estate and made $30,000 profit in just a few months.

Even more though, I’ve speculated in the stock market with “Small Cap,” penny stocks and have had returns in some cases in excess of 10,000%.

I know it sounds crazy, but it’s completely true.

Having this experience gives me a bit of a unique perspective when evaluating whether something is an investment, speculation or cost when it comes to building a business.

Let me explain…

Like in the stock market, when investing in your business, you do so expecting a return. You may even know exactly what that return is going to be.

Let’s say you’re selling widgets and have been doing so for two years. You know that your profit margin is 40% and after expenses you have a profit margin of 15%. So when you invest in more widgets and bring them to market, you know in advance what your returns are going to be. Assuming of course, that the market hasn’t substantially changed.

When I’m speculating in stocks, my goal is always a ten-fold return. I don’t always achieve that of course and sometimes it’s even more as I’ve mentioned above.

I’ve been speculating and evaluating companies for so long, I can tell up front what my risks are and I’ll make a purchase with all the risks in mind, knowing it’s a speculation, not an investment.

In your business, you may decide to add a new widget to your virtual or brick and mortar store front, speculating that your clientele will want what you have to offer.

Hopefully you have some research or proof that this new widget is salable and people will move it off of your shelves quickly.

This is the type of knowledgeable speculation that could add substantially to your bottom-line profit. If you’re right, maybe it’s something that could change the future of your company.

Then there are “costs.”

These are items in our life and business that are necessities but may not provide us with a direct, quantifiable benefit.

In my business, I include things like my printer, the extra computer screens I have and other items that make my life easier or I just can’t go without. But, I also can’t put a number on what the returns are for having them easily available to me.
