Talking To God

Recently I told a friend that I sometimes talk to God. My friend had the most curious response. He said I do not talk to God. When I talk to God, I am, according to my friend, really talking to myself.

I guess I just don't understand the argument. Is he suggesting that talking to myself when praying logically implies not talking to God? That would be a remarkably false conclusion!
