Gosaikunda
Gosaikunda is a beautiful and sacred alpine lake located in Rasuwa District inside Langtang National Park, Nepal. It lies at an altitude of about 4,380 metres above sea level. The lake is an important pilgrimage site for Hindus and is also respected by Buddhist and Bon traditions.
According to Hindu mythology, Gosaikunda was created by Lord Shiva. It is believed that after drinking poison during the Samudra Manthan, Shiva struck the mountain with his trident (Trishul) to obtain cool water for his burning throat. The water formed the sacred lake.
Gosaikunda is also famous for its natural beauty, surrounding mountains, alpine landscapes, and other nearby lakes. The Gosaikunda wetland was listed as a Ramsar site in 2007, recognizing its international importance.
Thousands of pilgrims visit Gosaikunda, especially during Janai Purnima, when devotees traditionally take a holy bath in the cold waters of the lake. It is also a popular destination for trekkers who enjoy Himalayan scenery and adventure.
Gosaikunda is therefore a special place where religion, nature, mountains, and adventure come together. It is one of the most beautiful and important high-altitude destinations in Nepal.
