Truth or Lie
When did we become the society that said it was "ok" to tell a lie? I had a conversation with someone on Facebook who said to me, "some lies are ok". "Some lies do less harm than others". So can anyone tell me how this came to be ok? We teach our children (or at least I did) to tell the truth. So, yes, the conversation was a bit political, but I'm not going there. HONESTY. When we look it, according to Miriam Webster the definition of honesty - the quality of being honest. Synonyms: integrity, uprightness, honorableness, honor, morality So, when, why, how did it become ok with us as a society as a whole to "judge" which lie is less harmful? The individual I was chatting with maintained his stance by saying, “everybody lies.” Well, ok, so if you ask your husband, “Does this dress make me look fat?” Of course, he will say, or should say no! Is that perhaps the “justified” lie this man was referring? While I believe those in high positions should be held to higher standards than most, shouldn’t we all strive to live by those same standards? And about those in high positions, when will we put our feet down and say enough? What is a lie: a false statement made with deliberate intent to deceive; an intentional untruth; a falsehood. So, what in the troubled times we are in are we telling our children about being truthful and honest? Do Government officials get to be exempt from that? Is it ok to break the law if you did not INTEND to do harm? If our officials are to lead by example, how can we as parents explain the deceit in our own government?
