Preservation of grain products: some practical advice
How long are cereal products stored? What should be observed in particular? The following tips and suggestions will help you.
Although most foods have an expiration date, some of them, if stored properly, will stay much longer. In the first part of the series dedicated to the "preservation of individual foods," you will discover everything that revolves around the conservation of cereal products.
Bread and baked goods
The bread should be consumed as soon as possible. The darker the bread, the longer it is kept. The white bread remains fresh for about three days, while the whole wheat flour is stored for up to a week. It is preferable to keep the bread in a breadbox or in a special bag. Avoid storing bread in the fridge as it will dry out quickly. Did you know that bread is ideally suited for freezing? Frozen in slices, the bread quickly thaws.
If the bread is moldy it is necessary to throw it away, because the poison of the mushrooms spreads quickly. However, it must be said that bread dries more easily than it does badly. Do not throw away the dry bread, but free your imagination; you can e.g. turn it into breadcrumbs, use it in soups to surprise your guests with tasty recipes like bread cake. Flour and granola
If stored hermetically and dry (e.g. in a closed container that protects against pests), flour and granola can be kept well past the expiration date indicated on the packages. However, it should be remembered that whole wheat flour deteriorates faster than white flour, and therefore it must be processed first.
Potatoes
The potatoes must absolutely be stored in a dark and cool place like the cellar. Never use potatoes with green spots on the peel, as they are highly toxic! The shoots of the potatoes, however, are completely harmless: just remove them and remove a little 'peel more.
Rice and pasta
Rice and pasta can be consumed well beyond the expiry date, provided they are stored in a dry and closed container. Packs of pasta or rice moldy or assaulted by food moths must be immediately disposed of. Be particularly careful with products in recycled cardboard containers; it is advisable to transfer the contents in a jar since the recycled cardboard contains substances harmful to health.
