GPUGRID - New multicore CPU appsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #gridcoin8 years ago (edited)

GPUGRID.net is a volunteer distributed computing project for biomedical research from the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona (Spain) with over 2500 active members. They are utilising the GPUs of volunteer computers to perform research on various topics for example Cancer, HIV/AIDS and Neural Disorders. The BOINC platform is used to transfer workunits over the Internet to the volunteer’s computers.

GPUGRID is also one of the 25 whitelisted Gridcoin projects. The Gridcoin network rewards BOINC users in paying GRC for their efforts, which can help to offset a part of the costs like electricity bills.

GPUGRID requires specific hardware and for people who don’t have one of the supported GPUs, it was impossible to participate in GPUGRID’s research. Fortunately there is now an opportunity to join with your CPU. GPUGRID has started testing a multicore CPU application for quantum chemistry tasks. Currently the test application only runs on Linux but hopefully a Windows version will appear in near future as well.

So, if you like the scientific goals of GPUGRID but don’t have an appropriate GPU, you can now help with testing the CPU based application.

Very good news. It's a little bad when the project is strictly aimed at a certain kind, when it is possible to work on a GPU and a CPU on a project - then it's easier, you can concentrate all your equipment on one project.

From Barcelona eh? Seems a perfect project for a certain sporty boinc'er ;-)
