The spiritual guide of God: Do not hide your face from me, or I will be like those who go into the pit. Psalm 143:7
The Psalm 143 is a hymn where a devotee of God asks for protection from above against the persecution of his enemies. The author of the song invokes God's mercy (mercy, kindness, gentleness) and love as reasons to call for help in the face of danger. It's debatable, but it is very likely that the author of the Psalm was King David himself, and that the Psalm reflects some moments of his life, such as when he was persecuted by King Saul.
And among the requests made by this devotee of God in the Psalm, there is one very interesting one that is worth highlighting: "Do not hide your face from me, or I will be like those who go into the pit" Psalm 143:7.
The devotee earnestly asks the Lord not to hide His face from him, and seeing the face of God in the Bible has many meanings. In the Book of Exodus, it is written that God told Moses: "But you may not look directly at my face, for no one may see me and live" Exodus 33:20. The Old Testament teaches that no one can see the face of God, but in some texts, this has another meaning, such as the outpouring of his spirit. In this sense, for example, it can be said that Solomon saw the face of God when, in the sacred place of Gibeon, he received the wisdom of the Lord.
But seeing the face of God can also have another meaning, more related to the Psalm, and that is the spiritual guide of God, that is, receiving God's judgment in the face of a situation of great danger, something on which David's life depended in many situations. Perhaps this is the most logical interpretation of the devotee's request to God, because in the Bible those who do not have this spiritual guidance are condemned people; in other words, not seeing the face of God is ultimately the result of a life full of sins, and this is so because of an explanation from Isaiah: "But your iniquities have separated you from your God" Isaiah 59:2. And this distressing request of the psalmist to see the face of God is ultimately the same coexistence with the divine, belonging to the family of God as blessed children.
