Gun Rights AND the Responsibility that goes with them
“The Right and The Responsibility”
Every year we choose a theme for the Combat Focus Shooting Instructors Conference. The theme is meant to plant a seed for our team in regard to focus, motivation, intention and/or guiding principle for the upcoming year of work education others in the use of lethal force.
When it comes to guns in America, the principles of Rights and Responsibilities are overlapping. It’s not one or the other. Our Constitution guarantees the right, common sense requires the responsibility. Separating these two things is how we get infringement. Separating these two things is how we get accidents, recklessness and just about every evil or negligent act with a gun that I can think of. Separating these two things is how guns owners get misunderstood or misrepresented. Mistakes can be made, of course… but, we must work to avoid them. Education is the key.
As Defensive Shooting Instructors, and Personal Defense Educators, our CFS Team is committed to spreading responsibility throughout the entire community of gun owners. Responsibility for safe ownership, storage and staging. Responsibility for following the laws as they exist in regard to firearms ownership, storage, carry and use. Responsibility in regard to training, practice and knowing your ability in regard to the defensive use of firearms.
Of course, we are also committed to educating about the rights we have in regard to gun ownership, carry and use. This education is best done through reasoned discussion and explanation, not through rhetoric, hyperbole or fear mongering. Encouraging others to understand those rights and exercise them, especially in regard to being prepared to defend themselves or others they care about, is another part of our responsibility as members of the gun owning community.
IUS ET ONUS, the 2016 CFS Instructor Conference motto.
