“Death of Gurus.”
A Brief Cultural History of the American Self-Help Figure.
By 2026, a noticeable chorus of former cult members, spiritual abuse survivors, and secular skeptics has begun to frame the moment as the death of the guru. Whether this is prophecy, wishful thinking, or simply another turn in a long cultural cycle, it raises a useful question: how did gurus become so powerful in American life in the first place?
The original meaning of guru
The word guru comes from Sanskrit, where it denotes a teacher who dispels ignorance, gu (darkness) and ru (remover). Traditionally, a guru was not a motivational personality or a brand, but a disciplined transmitter of knowledge, often embedded in a lineage and constrained by ethical obligations. Authority was relational and contextual, not theatrical or universal. The guru did not promise wealth, certainty, or transcendence on demand.
That restraint would not survive transplantation into American culture.
Self-improvement before gurus: Samuel Smiles.
Modern American self-help does not begin in ashrams but in Victorian moral philosophy. Self-Help by Samuel Smiles, published in 1859, framed personal advancement as the result of character, discipline, and perseverance. Smiles was explicit: self-help was not a shortcut, not mystical, and not a substitute for social responsibility. His vision assumed limits, economic, moral, and structural.
Importantly, Smiles did not position himself as a savior. The book mattered more than the man.
Napoleon Hill and the myth of success consciousness.
The American guru truly emerges in the early 20th century with Napoleon Hill, often described as the originator of “success philosophy.” Hill reframed prosperity as a function of belief, visualization, and alignment with an invisible law of attraction. Wealth, he suggested, was not merely earned but manifested.
Yet the mythology frays on inspection. Hill lost his fortune during the Great Depression and spent years entangled in financial instability. This contradiction, preaching mastery (while failing materially) did not diminish his influence. Instead, it set a pattern: personal failure could be reframed as a lesson, a test, or evidence that the student had misunderstood the teaching. Accountability subtly shifted from the guru to the follower.
Alan Watts and the spiritual turn.
Mid-century America saw a different kind of figure in Alan Watts. Watts popularized Zen, Taoism, and Eastern philosophy through lectures and radio talks, emphasizing paradox, impermanence, and the illusion of control. Unlike later gurus, Watts was skeptical of rigid systems and openly critical of spiritual ambition. (Continued...)
