Ever experienced a severe lower limb pain during your long flight? It can happen in long journey by bus and train as well. Let me explain why it happens -
It is easy for blood to reach your foot, but it takes some effort to push the blood back to heart. To push blood against Gravity, our body has developed some mechanism in lower leg.
Just beneath our Calf muscles a dense network of veins is present. When we walk or flex the Calf muscles, venous plexus is compressed and blood is pushed upwards to received by heart.
During long distance travel you remain seated for hours. Calf muscles doesn't get to contract and blood does not pushed up.
As blood stays in legs and more blood keep coming easily towards leg, it creates congestion and blood stasis in legs which causes severe pain in leg. Stasis of blood can cause blood clot formation which can further worsen the situation.

Now you can understand why you are advised during long flights to walk in-between continuous seating. It allows calf muscles to contract and relax with every step you take and keep pumping blood towards heart. That's how it prevents clotting and congestion and in result, prevents pain.
