It is so important to find a place that treats them with respect. We went through this with my cousin last year. He wanted more independence but didn't know where to turn. We found great services for adults with intellectual disabilities at Gateway Counseling Center. Their programs are specifically designed to build daily living habits and social confidence. The staff works closely with each individual to set real goals, whether it is learning how to cook or navigating public transit safely. It made a huge difference in his routine, and he is much more active now. Definitely look for a provider that focuses on individual growth rather than just keeping people busy in a room all day.
