NOT ALWAYS THE GREATEST

It is advisable you read the text first

📜TEXT:2 SAMUEL 17:1-14📜

2 Samuel 17:1-14
[1]Moreover Ahithophel said unto Absalom, Let me now choose out twelve thousand men, and I will arise and pursue after David this night: [2]And I will come upon him while he is weary and weak handed, and will make him afraid: and all the people that are with him shall flee; and I will smite the king only:[3]And I will bring back all the people unto thee: the man whom thou seekest is as if all returned: so all the people shall be in peace.

[4]And the saying pleased Absalom well, and all the elders of Israel.
[5]Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith.[6]And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not; speak thou.[7]And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time.

[8]For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people.[9]Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom.

[10]And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men.[11]Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person.[12]So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one.

[13]Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there.[14]And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.

🔑📖KEY VERSE: "And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom" (2 SAMUEL 17:14).

One of the greatest fighters of all time was often heard declaring, "I am the greatest the world has ever seen." Once, he was on an airplane; the flight attendant came and asked him to buckle his seatbelt. He replied, "Superman don't need no seatbelt." She responded, "Superman don't need no plane."

Ahithophel had been David's counsellor for years. He was a great man and highly respected. Ahithophel supported ambitious Absalom, in his rebellion against King David his father. When asked to give counsel about the way forward, Ahithophel suggested that he should be allowed to lead an elite force made up of the best fighting men in Israel to confront David while he was still weak and discouraged. The plan was to kill David and bring back all his loyal troops.

Ahithophel's counsel was countered by Hushai, David's friend, who had infiltrated Absalom's camp on David's instruction. Hushai's counsel was deemed better than that of Ahithophel. When Ahithophel saw that Hushai's counsel was adopted rather than his, he was unhappy and hanged himself.

Leaders with exaggerated sense of self-worth are arrogant and dangerous. Ahithophel was so wise in counsel that David prayed against his counsel more than Absalom's conspiracy. He had become a tin-god and almost assumed leadership over the rebellious administration of Absalom.

Some successful people have this same exaggerated opinion about their importance. They cannot work under someone else or agree to take instructions from others. Remember, pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.

✍🏽THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: A man's pride can be his downfall.

      *MEDITATION*

How God fights for you in your absence

1. Conspiracy against Christians
a. David, who was at this time on the run for his life, did not know the nature of the conspiracy at the highest level against him even though the conspiracy was real.
b. There are always physical and spiritual conspiracies for those at the top in the spirit and other endeavours due to envy, jealousy and hatred. Always work in this consciousness prayerfully and be watchful.

2. Betrayer by the Beneficiaries
Whoever thought that it was David's son that will betray and seek his death? Jesus said, "a man's enemy are they of his own household". Never take ungodly close relations for granted. Can you think of the betrayal of David by his confidant? Sinners will always remain sinners and should be dealt with in wisdom no matter how close. Mind you, this conspiracy was not just to neutralise David but to kill them. When wisdom speaks, only fools despise it. Beware and be wise🤔

3. Weakness of human wisdom
a. It is difficult to fault the wisdom of Ahitophel in vv1,2. David with his army was truly weary and discouraged and that was why he abdicated the throne and ran out of the city.
b. The wisdom of Hushai appeared really foolish. Think of drawing a rope around a city in order to capture David and his army, v13.
c. The foolish counsel was accepted and the wise counsel turned into foolishness. What can you learn from that?🤔
d. God knows how to turn the wisdom of man into foolishness and the folly of the humble into wisdom. So be humble.
e. Never put your trust in your wisdom or intelligence but in the living God as the ultimate Guide.

4. Defence of the defenceless
David was actually helpless at this time. Yet God fought for him even when he was not there. God does the same to the saints and penitent sinners. God is the defence of the defenceless, even you👌

Prayer points
Give praises to God because He is the defence of the defenceless🙏
Lord, endow me with wisdom in dealing with unbelievers including those who appear friendly and trustworthy🙏
Lord, frustrate all forms of conspiracy against my life and destiny by evil forces and wicked personalities🙏
Lord, let all conspiracies against your children be brought to nought by your power and wisdom🙏

HYMN If the Lord be with us
