The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 4, DTube Video #6
Welcome to my DTube Hebrew reading & language series.
The full study is now on line covering the Alef-Beyt here in my blog. This is a beginners program to teach letters, vowels, and reading. The vowels are marked in this bible and are designed to help avoid confusion on what a word is and how it is pronounced. The confusion is obvious in the hundreds of interpretations globally.
Today we are continuing in Genesis 4:16-18
The first question that everyone comes up with is, "Who did Cain marry?" The Torah does not include him on the chart of first born children since Abel was dead and Cain had left the presence of God, seen in today's reading. I will get back to who Cain married in a bit.
Those first two had been born during the first hundred and thirty years, then Seth was born. I speculate that Seth married one of his younger sisters. Then his son, Enosh, likely married an aunt or even another of Adam's daughters. Human DNA has experienced degradation over the years, which is why marrying close relatives does not work out anymore.
Like a new brick being rained on, it has perfect corners and gets rounded by weather over decades and centuries - our DNA still had perfect corners, or near so, maintaining thousand-year lifespans back then. Marrying between the first hundred or so children was not a problem. See the middle of the road figure of 810 thousand people coming out of two generations below.
America could be discovered and developed to the present day level three times during Adam's life, not to mention the seven levels of grand, great grand, great great grand... 6x-great grand - children that were having children and moving out into all parts of the world. All of that while Adam lived to see it!
Lamech was still talking to his g-g-g-g-g-g grandfather Adam for fifty years or so asking what it was like to talk to God in the wind of the evening. Well, at least he could have.
People were living a good 800-1000 years each.
Getting back to Cain
This lesson has us reading how he settled in the land of Nod. If Adam and his wife took somewhere between 1 and 129 years to have another child, Cain had at least eight hundred years to settle and run a cross some of his relatives as they spread out and lived in tents, which we will see in the next lesson.
Present day example
If I think back to 1918 on my family tree, I cannot even name all the children who were born from my great grandparents (in just 100 years) but I do know that all 30 of my ancestors from my children up to my grandparents. I do not know any of my grandparents' five siblings' children. If they each have 30, then we are talking about 150 human beings born of a 100-year time span.
In present day times, people normally produce children over a thirty years or less period in their lives. It's the being too young and later being too old problem. Let's say Adam and his wife stopped having kids 100 years before dying, they still had them for at least 800 years to have and name Seth's brothers and sisters.
The people back then were probably producing children for 600 of their 800-1000 year life span. If so, a conservative figure would be 600 children from Adam and his wife, another 600 from Seth and his wife, plus 600 produced by each of Seth's 599 brothers and sisters. Yes. 360,000 children could have been in the world, calling Adam "Dad" or "Grandpa"!
Maximum, if starting at 50 years old and done having kids at 950, would be 902,500 children and grandchildren for Adam. If one child were born every ten years, you still have over 9,000 kids and grand kids of Adam. No matter how you slice it, Some of those are going to go find Cain!
All the above does not include any of the first ever great grandchildren. Just up to Enosh and his siblings.
"And God said, 'Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth."
Today, I read and highlighted a name that had changed in pronunciation and the differences in actions done by a man or a woman. Some new vocabulary.
Somebody should ask why the names we are reading, ie; who fathered who, are not all the same as the names on the chart above.

@hebrew,
According to that chart our life time is degrading and you nicely explained it! Moreover, it's a bless to read and learn another language! Great video and very descriptive!
Shabbat Shalom~
An interesting count. I think now is not so Important how many all the children were there. The main thing that they did
When I searched for a suitable cover image they were all about "Who did Cain marry" so I thought I would run some numbers and see how many he could have encountered (from just Adam and Eve) before he died.
You can make a lot of rug rats in 800-900 years.
