The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Exodus 18, Post #3
Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.
Exodus 18:12-16
We saw the arrival of Moshe's (Moses') wife and father-in-law last week as they told each other about things that had happened in each other's lives. Today, yee-t'Roh (Jethro) gets to see the multitudes that were saved and brought out from Mitsraim (Egypt). He had heard about it but now he sees the scale of the miracles El Shaddai (The Almighty) had done.
We start with yee-t'Roh bringing his sacrifices to God and a burnt offering. The following day, Moshe sat as the people came for him to make judgement on issues or disagreement between each and his neighbor. I am guessing that this was a normal thing that happened. (Moshe forgot to delegate and is overworked?)
Yee-t'Roh sees this process and asks why Moshe is the only one doing this job. Some of the people would stand in lines from morning until night time and not even be seen by Moshe. Moshe was the one who spoke to Elohim often and knew what God expects of his people.
I am guessing that next week will include training for the 'customer service' department so that Moshe need not be spread so thin.
Today's Reading
English
And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, brought a burnt offering and sacrifices to God; and Aaron came with all the elders of Israel to eat bread with Moses' father-in-law before God.
The next day Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from morning till evening. When Moses' father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said, "What is this that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning till evening?" And Moses said to his father-in-law, "Because the people come to me to inquire of God; when they have a dispute, they come to me and I decide between one person and another, and I make them know the statutes of God and his laws."
