The language of ivrit ( עברית ) Genesis 44, Post #3

Welcome to my Hebrew reading & language series.

Genesis 44:17-23

We saw the brothers being searched, found to be thieves, and interrogated by Joseph last week. I mentioned that they had not packed up their own donkeys before leaving so (to me) they should have brought that up to the steward when being caught "red handed" with the cup. They had offered the life of the man who stole anything if found. They had also offered to be slaves if anything were to be found on them.

Today, we hear Joseph's response. He is ordering that only the man who had the cup will be held, meaning Benjamin.

Judah responds with a long winded story of all that had happened up to the point we are at now, and it will continue next week. He starts with Joseph's question as to the number of brothers and goes on to retell the story over again, in past tense this time, going on until the part where Joseph wanted them to bring the youngest with them when they return. That is where we are now.

This retelling of it all continues next week.

English

But he said, "Far be it from me that I should do so! Only the man in whose hand the cup was found shall be my servant. But as for you, go up in peace to your father."

Then Judah went up to him and said, "Oh, my lord, please let your servant speak a word in my lord's ears, and let not your anger burn against your servant, for you are like Pharaoh himself. My lord asked his servants, saying, 'Have you a father, or a brother?' And we said to my lord, 'We have a father, an old man, and a young brother, the child of his old age. His brother is dead, and he alone is left of his mother's children, and his father loves him.' Then you said to your servants, 'Bring him down to me, that I may set my eyes on him.' We said to my lord, 'The boy cannot leave his father, for if he should leave his father, his father would die.' Then you said to your servants, 'Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my f ace again.'
