SLC S-32-W1// "Traditional Milkshakes that beat the heat- Almond Milkshake"
Hello friends and welcome to another exciting week to make a good nutritious drink for summer.
|
|---|
Milkshakes is a good drink and I haven’t had the privilege to prepare it before until now. I am glad that I could prepared such and I totally enjoyed the process. Join me as we delve into the theme for the week.
What are the traditional cold beverages of your region? Why should we consume more cold beverages during the summer season? |
|---|
In my country Nigeria, we have many traditional cold beverages that are very refreshing and are connected to our culture. These drinks are popularly taken during warm seasons because they help to keep the body cool and refreshed.
They include
Zobo: A very popular drink made from hibiscus flower petals and we would usually add pineapple, cloves, and ginger to it and some sweeter for a sweet taste. It’s has a deep red colour, a tangy taste and it’s rich in vitamin C and antioxidants. We usually serve it in parties and family gatherings and also sold in street markets.
Kunu: Kunu is popular in the Northern region of my country and it’s made from grains like sorghum millet or maize and usually flavored with ginger and sweet potatoes. It’s usually served cold and has a filling feel and also served in gatherings.
Fura da NoNo: is very well known in the northern region too and it’s made from fermented milk (Nono) and millet balls (fura). It’s very satisfying in hot weather and also rich in calcium and protein.
Palm wine: just like the name, is a natural fermented drink that we tap from palm trees. It has a sweet taste when it fresh and a stronger taste when it’s fermented. It’s usually shared in traditional ceremonies.
Tiger-nut drink: It’s made from blended tiger nut seeds and sometimes flavored with ginger, dates or coconut depending on you want or can be prepared alone too. It usually served cold and It has a rich creamy taste and it’s a good source of fiber and nutrients.
Why We Should Consume More Cold Beverages During Summer
Here are some reasons why we should take cold Bebe during summer and hot weather.
- We loose alot of water during summer through sweating, therefore we take cold drinks to keep our body hydrated and cool. The drinks helps to replace lost fluids.
- It helps to cool our body temperature due to extreme heat.
- It helps to provide comfort for us and improve our mood during hot weathers
- they are also a good source of energy and nutrients for the body especially those made from grains and fruits
- they support digestion and are a healthier alternative to the regular soft drinks
Make a Badaam Paal(Almond Milkshake) is shared in the course or make it as per your style, with a detailed step-by-step procedure along with images. |
|---|
I made the milk shake taught in class as per my style. I wasn’t able to get almond nuts as they are scare here and also very expensive if eventually seen, so I substituted it with groundnut since they have the same feel and texture and almost same taste.
I also used Chai seed in place of Basil seed as it’s not available in my region. I used dates in place of sugar to sweetened the milk shake because I am trying to reduce my artificial sugar intake so I go for natural sweeteners instead. Thank you.
So these are the ingredients I used for my milk shake:

Milk
Groundnuts
Chai seed
Dates
Procedure
I added water to the chia seed and allowed them to soak for about 15 minutes.

While they were soaking, I proceeded to blend the groundnuts and the dates. I had to remove the Pitts in the dates before blending them. Then the groundnut and dates were ready.

I poured out the already boiled and cooled milk into the bowl and began adding the ingredients.
I first added the blended groundnuts and then followe by the chia seed. By now it was soft after soaking. I added two spoons.

I then added the blended dates to sweeten the whole mixture and I also added water to it and mixed all together.

Hi! I loved your entry.
It was interesting to know beverages you use to prepare in Nigeria.
Like you I had thought to use chia instead of basil seeds, in my country I hade never heard of it use for consumption, but I had read that chai should have a longer soak time.
Also you were very smart using dates to add sweet taste.
If I get to buy the almonds or peanut like you did, I know I will enjoy this drink, it looks great, healthy and delicious.
