It happened the day before yesterday. As we are now approaching the very end of the month of Chaitra, the weather patterns are shifting. The skies turn overcast at a moment's notice, accompanied by gusty winds, flashes of lightning, torrential downpours, and—at times—the deafening roar of thunder. As soon as afternoon sets in, the atmosphere takes on a different character—becoming strangely sultry and oppressive. Consequently, for the past few days, storms and rain have been breaking out in many areas as soon as evening falls. I am speaking of the region of Bardhaman. So, the day before yesterday, a sudden storm erupted, bringing with it gusty winds and intense flashes of lightning. With the rumbling of the clouds came a torrential downpour, accompanied by the fierce roar of thunder.

Ripe tamarinds are currently swaying from the trees in our hostel compound. They have all ripened to the point of drooping; the moment a gusty wind blows, they fall to the ground. However, the cleaning staff gathers them all up and takes them away as soon as morning breaks. Consequently, not a single one remains to be found later. So, the moment the storm and rain subsided that night, I ventured out with another hostel-mate to gather some tamarinds. We were equipped with nothing more than the flashlights on our phones, a small plastic bag, and a tiny basket. (I, of course, had brought the plastic bag, while my friend—a girl named Tamima—carried the small basket.) It was pitch black beneath the tamarind tree, and amidst the surrounding bushes and undergrowth, there was the looming fear of snakes. Nevertheless, we took the risk and proceeded to gather the fallen tamarinds. There was an abundance of them scattered on the ground. By gathering tamarinds from the hostel garden, I once again revived a sliver of that childhood joy—a cherished memory of rushing out to collect mangoes from our family orchard back home whenever a storm rolled in.

Despite the dim, diffused light from our phones, we managed to find so many tamarinds that our small basket and plastic bag were filled to the brim. In the end, I carried the surplus tamarinds back wrapped in my orna (scarf), while Tamima carried hers tucked into her housecoat.

Then, I brought the tamarinds into the room and—wiping them down one by one—cleaned them all thoroughly before drying them under a fan, as they were quite damp. So, that was my experience of gathering tamarinds.

I hope you will like my post very much.I will be back again with a new post later. Until then, everyone stay well. May God keep everyone healthy.

Best regards:
