Welcome to Narvik War Museum

in #history7 years ago (edited)

In Narvik there is a War Museum with many items from WW2 and exhibitions from wars all over the world. In this post I will present some pictures from the museum.

Here you see the uniforms that the soldiers was wearing in the war. In the Narvik area there was Polish, English and Norwegian forces and also the French foreign legion fighting against the Germans.

Winter coat and a doll found in the mountains after the war.

Here we see a German soldier with a bike loaded with an MG.

This in an MG 34 a much used weapon in WW2. It was arguable the most advanced machine gun in the world at the time.

This is a Norwegian soldier uniform with a Vicers Machine Gun

Here is a steering wheel saved from the debt of the fjord by divers. Probably from a destroyer ship.

Here we see a naval mine, meant to destroy submarines and boats and the picture of a plane in the background.

Here is a canon, probably from a boat.

War Ships entering the fjord. Much of the battle was fought on the ocean, many boats sunk, and there are still shipwrecks outside the coast of Narvik. Narvik was a strategic point for the Germans because of the ice free harbour and Iron minerals coming from Sweden by train.

Ship bells from German battleships, used to indicate the time on board the ship and remind the sailors of their duty watches.

Lifebuoy, seal harpoons, iron minerals and an waffle iron.

This is a German Mortar.

Pieces of various explosives.

A bomb dropped from a plane. Many houses and civilian lives were lost during air raids. My grandmother can still remember hiding in the basement to stay safe while the planes dropped bombs close by.

Various intelligence equipment. Typing machine and radio transmitter.

A mechanical calculator

An anti aircraft to shoot down planes.

Accordion to cheer up the mood

Medals, money and ration cards

Identity card

War propaganda

Periscope

A torpedo, sent from submarines to blow up ships

Explosives with Angel wings hanging from the ceiling

Various helmets from fallen soldiers

A waterdrop movie on the wall

Giant Cannon

Some machine

A Truck

A Tank

Pictures from the war

I hope this post have given you some insight into the war years in Narvik and how it was for the soldiers, civilians and prisoners involved. Hopefully we will never have to experience the horrors and tragedy of war. Sadly war is still a reality in many parts of the world today.

Great post, thanks for the photos! Narvik, if i'm not wrong, is the first time the Allies came into contact with the Germans and they managed to checked them decisively for a while... Until the collapse of the Western front obliged the soldiers to move out

Thats right, they gave the Germans a good fight both at sea and in the mountains. There are still items from the war lying around in the mountains. My brother and cousin found a gun not far from our house some years ago.

Hmm det der ser kjent ut. Jeg kan ha värt der för.

Det har du nok :) Nå har de nettop fått nytt fancy krigs museum med nye instalasjoner. Har blitt kjempefint.

Neat museum, cool pics. Doesn't seem too busy there.

@cameilla is it illegal to sale Steemit logo on art? I was thinking about doing it too.

I think it is legal...

great post, nice photos! :)
