In 2006 Dr. Kate Forster leaves the house she has been renting by the lake to move to Chicago. As he leaves, he leaves a note in the mailbox for the new tenant with the intention of sending him the letters that can reach his new address and also warns him that the dog tracks in the entrance were already there when she arrived. Two years earlier, in 2004, the architect Alex Wyler arrives at the lake house and finds the letter that Kate had left in the mailbox. When reading it Alex is surprised, since the house is abandoned and there are no dog tracks in the entrance.
The architect begins to restore the house and his dog treads black paint and leaves the traces to which Kate referred. Both continue sending correspondence, but discover that the flag of the mailbox goes up and down alone, with no one around. Baffled Alex asks Kate how he could know what would happen to the tracks of his dog if when he arrived home was uninhabited. Kate, also surprised, answers and both realize that they are living in the same place, but two years apart.
Both continue to send each other letters for a while and Kate asks her to please return her favorite book, Jane Austen's Persuasion, which she lost at a train station. For his part, Alex will send you a map with notes and curiosities to visit his favorite places in the city of Chicago. They will also coincide at Kate's birthday party, organized by Morgan her boyfriend at that time. Alex will not tell you anything about the correspondence they keep since for her it has not happened yet. After kissing at the party they discover that they already knew each other before they started to write.
After knowing that they had previously met, they try to meet again, so they reserve a table at the Il Mare restaurant. Kate goes to the appointment, but Alex does not show up. After the disappointment that has been for them not to find Kate tells him that he witnessed a traffic accident in the Plaza Daley on Valentine's Day in 2006, and that a man died on his hands unable to do anything to save him. A year later Alex is on that same day and returns to the lake house in search of the letter that makes you remember that date. At the same time, Kate visits an architect to supervise the renovation plans of a house she wants to buy.
Alex finds the letter and quickly goes to look for Kate. During the meeting with the architect Kate sees a picture of the lake house in the conference room and discovers that Alex painted him and that he died two years ago in a traffic accident in the Daley Square on Valentine's Day and that it was him the man who died on his hands that day. After finding out, he rushes out to send a letter to Alex through the mailbox and warn him not to go looking for her, that she loves him and that he waits two years. Finally Alex waits and as he reads the letter he heads back to the lake house, where Kate is waiting for him.
