DHP Episode 200: Honest HistorysteemCreated with Sketch.

in #history6 years ago

Prof CJ's Dangerous History Podcast has marked its 200th episode with a discussion about the nature of history as an academic field. How do historians interpret the past, what sources do they use, how do they analyze data, and so on.

Which map is more accurate? (images sourced from episode page)

The map is not the territory. History is not the past. Even if we have accurate timelines, it is still little more than "atomized trivia." What is the verifiable fact, the deeper meaning, the causal relationship, the practical lesson, and the intellectual fulfilment? I like podcasts like the DHP because of the effort to make these connections, and the explicit philosophical thought behind the subject at hand. This can be an abstraction from fact into the realm of theory and ideology, but it can be more illuminating whether you agree or not.

Check out this episode if you're new to the DHP. You'll learn something useful.
