Butch and Sundance: The Boys Find Real Jobs In Bolivia
Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!
We're in a series about two of America's most famous and successful outlaws, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. In case you haven't been following along, the boys had moved to Argentina in South America to start their lives over and to avoid capture in the U.S.
They were accompanied by the girlfriend of Sundance, Etta Place, and they did indeed build a successful ranching operation until they were forced to go on the run again. In the last post we discussed the mystery of Etta and what may have happened to her.
We do know one thing
While there are many theories about that, the one thing we know for sure is that Butch and Sundance took jobs and apparently they were by themselves. We have interviews from men who worked with them, conducted by reporters, police detectives and probably the Pinkertons.
One man who employed Sundance to break mules for a railroad construction company described him this way..."He was employed by our company to break mules to harness and saddle and done a very good job...well dressed...did have a very fine Tiffany gold watch...it was not long before he was on the go again."
This guy remembered Sundance as being distant and shy but likeable.
The boys team up again
Sundance was on the go again to the Concordia Tin Mines in Bolivia where Butch was working. Obviously they planned this out, thinking it might look suspicious if two American cowboys showed up together.
Here is a Bolivian tin mining town, modern day. It may be the same one:
At Concordia Butch was hired to purchase and supply mules to use in the mining operation and was a big hit right off the bat because he would always return with excellent animals with money left over.
It wasn't long before he was promoted to guard the payroll going to the mine workers, many times it came to over $100,000! Is that ironic or what? lol..I love that job he had and they had no clue who he was!
I have to wonder if he was tempted at all.
Impressions about the boys
He boss stated about Butch.."He was an excellent and trustworthy employee..a good bargainer and always rendered a strict account of funds turned over to him." Of course! His mama raised him proper. lol. In spite of his record he could be a model citizen if he wanted to be.
Butch soon became a favorite at the mine of course. His boss was a man named Seibert which said of Butch..."Butch Cassidy was an exceptionally pleasant, cultured and charming man. He took well with the ladies and as soon as he arrived in a village he made friends with the little urchins and usually had some candy to give them."
But of Sundance he said...."Sundance was inclined to be distant, even sullen, and it was difficult to strike up a friendship with him." He was also known to be drinking heavily. I think it was to drown out his sorrow from missing Etta, whatever type of separation it was.
Even with Sundance's withdrawn and moody personality Seibert became good friends with them and enjoyed their company. The boys were dedicated and loyal employees and they'd once again settled down with honest jobs.
With the vast sum that they stole the year before I don't know why they didn't leave the country and settle down in a place where they weren't known at all. But we'll continue their story in the next post.
Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

I've never seen the movie or knew anything about these people other than the mention of their famous names prior, so I don't know what will happen...but I don't think it is going to go well for them. We shall see :)
what country are you from anyway? you've never seen the movie? wow. lol. Well you need to do that sometime, it's a classic. Great quality, won 3 or 4 Academy awards, that's the movie that had the song Rain Drops Keep Fallin On My Head, remember that one?
I mean I know this is ancient history and WAY before your time, heck it was almost before my time I was so young. But I know you've heard the song. That clip is great because it also shows Butch doing bicycle tricks like the real Butch did.
As far as how it goes for them, that's been debated for a hundred years! lol.
thanks so much for commenting, I know how much stuff you got going on and I wasn't trying to force you to comment but I do miss them so maybe deep down I was! lol. But I understand if you can;t, it's no problem. just makes your comments that much more special when you do have time.
I am familiar with that song, but didn't know where it came from. I will have to watch the movie some time. My husband is working hard this weekend in setting up a movie room - one of his dreams that he's been wanting to work on for years. He's the movie watcher in the household.
No worries, you didn't force me. I enjoy stopping in here, I just get distracted so easily :)
howdy again ginnyannette! well you have lots of distractions there! Oh how cool, I like the sound of his project. Ask him if he's ever seen that movie. It has a love story so most women like it even if they don't like guns(which is hard to imagine but I know it happens occassionally! lol).
I will ask him, once he is done obsessing over speaker placement - there are some things one just doesnt interrupt :)
haha! why don't you just tell him where to put the speakers, that's what Mrs. J would do! lol.

Howdy esteemapp! thanks so much for the upvote and for building such an impressive platform!
Howdy Janton! So I finally catch up, lol. So sorry about the delays, but I seem to be all over the place and not having enough time for everything I need to do.
Anyway, here I am, just read the whole roller coaster of the bunch and I must agree with you on Etta being dead. I am very sad about that, yet it does make sense. Because, why she would joined them in the robbery in the first place, if she was against that type of lifestyle. And if she would threaten Sundance about leaving him because she disapproved that type of lifestyle, I am sure he would stop for her. Clearly, they were able to live normal life if they wanted to. Anyway, we really don't know nothing for sure, but this what makes since to me the most. Either way, I feel sad for Sundance! Oh well, lets see what they come up next! I try to keep up, lol.
well howdy Miss Lena! so good to see you here and it looks like you are caught up now. What have you been so busy doing or working on?
You know me Janton, always busy with something especially with the boys, cooking, grocery shopping, seeing the doctors and photoshoots. I have to do another one tomorrow😊
I know, you are super busy! Is that why you don't have time for a social life? lol.
What kind of post is it tomorrow?
I don;t need social life! Is not like you have any, lol.
I mam doing photoshoot tomorrw, but I have post ready too. Soup recipe for tomorrw. I already wrote everything, but I still have to add couple of thing tomorrow.
I made Indian food today, so I will be taking photos of it tomorrow.
Indian food! I don't see very many recipes for Indian food on here do you? But that sounds very interesting and I bet it's going to be a thing of beauty!
I thought everyone needed a social life! You are very unusual but then these sites like steem are a form of social life.
Hey I'm different, I'm more like a hermit naturally. Are you saying you're a hermit? no because you're around the kids and your daughter all the time. I guess that's your type of social life and it sure is important for those kids to know you and learn from you.
You know, besides being around my kids, I am a hermit too, lol.
And Indian food is one of my favorites and it's very healthy and popular here where I live. You'll see! In the mean time, check the soup I just posted
Oh that's right I forgot about the soup! Ok I'll go over there this afternoon. I don't know if there are any Indian food restaurants locally but I know there are in Dallas of course.
For some reason I always think of hermits as being males. Like with a long white beard!
So it's hard to imagine you as a hermit but I believe you.
Morning janton, Butch is a very clever strategic man, I can't help but be suspicious with both of them settling into jobs. Am I right in thinking that there are underlying motives?? They sure are survivors.
Howdy tonight angiemitchell! Well I don't know why they stayed in South America but they are honestly working that job with no intentions of stealing from them, it's seems like if people treat him with respect then he is honorable back to them. I think he robbed that Argentina bank because he felt bitter and angry that they forced him off the ranch that he worked so hard for and spent a small fortune on so the bank job was payback.
I just realized that you are commenting on my stuff as I am reading yours! I really like the way you stick to the known facts and haven't jumped in to all the 100 and One speculative theories that are out there. It's one thing to speculate about why they did something or what they might have been thinking or how they could have been feeling and offer your thoughts and opinions, but there are so many different scenarios that people have invented that it would be crazy to get into all that! Nicely done!
Howdy tonight Melinda! thanks and yes it's such a great story even with just the facts that we know and I'm glad the movie was that way too. so we are commenting on each others posts at the same time! lol. Great minds think alike! Except I didn't have any intelligent comments on yours. lol.
Your comments are always thoughtful and intelligent! Once again I would say that I don't know how you do it oh, but I do know. You work your butt off from morning till night!
haha! I DO spend too much time on here but I also take a few hours off each day for other things, but then that forces me to work late so what you gonna do? I asked davemccoy today if he had anything concrete that I could tell Mrs. J (because she's over in the corner sharpening her axe) and he said sadly no.
But IF it lasts we have a chance to "make a small fortune" those of us that stayed with it anyway. That's what he said.
I agree with him 100%. You see more and more positive news every single day!
Oh yes! The irony of it all......to have Butch placed in charge of the payroll. Surely he must have been tempted, but another move at this stage may have been a strong motivation to do things right this time. Beside, taking wages handed to you would not have been the same challenge as robbing a bank. They probably enjoyed taking dangerous risks.
haha! howdy again Trudee! Yes Ma'am taking the payroll that they, or at least Butch(I'm not sure if Sundance was also a guard but he should have been because they were impressed with his shooting and gun handling skills)was in charge of would have been way too easy! lol. But at this point they seemed totally honorable.
It seemed like if he was treated with respect then he treated them with respect.
This is a long saga of these two legendary characters!

Well howdy sir kaminchan! Yes sir it is because they did alot of things in their lives, thanks so much for reading and commenting!
Any idea why they didn't go to Italy or France or somewhere like that?
howdy sir rossfletcher! no it makes no sense to me but it's easy to have 20/20 hindsight. lol.
It's just that after what happened to force them to abandon their ranch you'd think they would
want to get far, far away. I would have spent some time in a library, they were both avid readers,
and studied other countries of the world.
I'm sure they knew the law was looking for them at the ocean liners since they had used them before,
so they should have found a private ship captain who would take them overseas.
Thanks so much for reading and commenting!
I guess it would have been tricky to find someone to trust. Maybe long boat travel seemed too risky
I'm impressed with how much information exists, right down to statements from the boss about what kind of workers they were. I'm also impressed with how the boys can take jobs and go straight, but I have to figure at this point they already planned to do another robbery. Butch guarding the payroll - that hilarious!
haha! I know, Butch guarding the payroll. lol..how ironic. Yeah, they seem to go straight when they want to. Did you do a post today or were you too busy?
It will cost you a mouse click to find out. ;-)
oh ..lol. thanks for getting back to me because I forgot about that!
