THE CUMAEAN SIBYL
The Sibyls were women who were skilled in prophecy. They often lived at places on the boarders of the earth and the underworld, or where the worlds of the gods and humans came together.They used their proximity to thr gods to predicttje future. One of the most famous Sibyl lived at Cumae.
She had been a stunningly beautiful young woman, with whom Apollo had fallen in love. He granted her a gift in return for her favors and she asked for immortallity. But when she rebuffed Apollo, he condemmed her to an eternal old age
When Arneas came to consult her, she was a pathetic creature said to be about 700 years old.

When Aeneas travelled to the underworld from and entrance near Cumae, the Sibyl acted as his guide.
