A tragic love story is still present in the popular excursion resort
The other day I was writing about the beautiful countryside of Hrvatsko Zagorje. I also mentioned Veliki Tabor, a fortress build in the middle of the 15th century.
This monument of culture is located at 333 m above sea level.
The middle part is designed in the shape of a pentagon, with a lot of the towers and thick walls. It used to be a residential part but its real purpose was an attempt to defend from the enemy.
As I was saying the main legend from that time is a tragic love story of Veronika (an ordinary girl) and Fridrik (son of a count Herman II.). The count was against their love but in spite of that young couple got married. When Herman II. found out about that, and sent an army to catch newlyweds. first, Fridrik helped Veronika to escape to Slovenia but he got caught.
He was closed for over four years in a tower. Eventually, soldiers caught Veronika as well, but she was not that lucky just to be imprisoned.
Herman accused Veronika of being a witch and handed her over to the judges. 'This girl is only guilty of a great love that she has for you son' - they have ruled. But the cruel emperor decided not to respect their decision so poor Veronika ended up drown and her dead body was built into a wall that connects tower with the entrance to the castle.
Today, Veliki Tabor is a valuable archeological find and a museum.
The mountain on which Veronika and Fridrik met, is called 'a sinner hill' and everything here is dedicated to their love.
It is a perfect place not for secret lovers but for families and friends.
And yet you can find a memory to forbidden love at every corner.
