En algunas de mis publicaciones cuando hablo de mi huerto y de mis plantas también he comentado sobre las plagas de las cuales debemos estar muy pendientes. Aunque no son muchas las que tengo en casa porque realmente no cuento con espacio amplio, me he centrado en esos carcolitos que parecen tiernos y divinos pero en realidad son una gran amenaza, ¡acaban con todo, cuidado con ellos!

On the surface we see them with their shells, inside the earth or when we extract them from the vegetables they show up without them. So they are snails and slugs. These molluscs do not have legs, they are creeping animals, therefore they use their body to move, in each movement they leave a kind of sticky and unpleasant slime.

No son tan inofensivos como parecen, su capacidad de enterrarse les da también la libertad para destruir las plantas, se comen las raíces y ni cuenta nos damos. Una manera de alejarlos ha sido utilizando ceniza de carbón, es un método efectivo y debe hacerse con frecuencia porque así como desaparecen, aparecen de nuevo.

They are not as harmless as they seem, their ability to bury themselves also gives them the freedom to destroy the plants, they eat the roots and we do not even realize it. One way to keep them away has been to use charcoal ash, it is an effective method and must be done often because as they disappear, they appear again.

En la superficie los vemos con sus conchas o caparazón, dentro de la tierra o cuando los extraemos entre las hortalizas se muestran sin ellas. Entonces se tratan de caracoles y babosas. Estos moluscos no poseen patas, son animales rastreros, por ende usan su cuerpo para movilizarse, en cada movimiento van dejando una especie de baba pegajosa y desagradable.

Saqué unos ajoporros y ellos fueron los primeros en asomarse. Esta hortaliza debemos limpiarla hoja por hoja porque las molestosas plagas se esconden entre ellas. El cuerpo de las babosas posee músculos, son como los gusanos, su cuerpo parece elástico, flexibles.

I took out some garlic shoots and they were the first ones to show up. We must clean this vegetable leaf by leaf because the pesky pests hide among them. The body of the slugs has muscles, they are like worms, their body seems elastic.

Al encontrar estas babosas note lo abultado del estómago de una de ellas, parecía haber estado alimentándose en ese momento. Son verdaderamente repugnantes.

When I found these slugs I noticed how bulky one of them's stomach was, it seemed to be feeding at that moment. They are truly disgusting.

Por lo general escuchamos a nutricionistas recomendar el buen lavado de los alimentos. En el caso de las hortalizas es porque muchas veces, lo diminuto de los insectos los hace pasar desapercibidos. Las pequeñas plagas llamadas babosas producen la enfermedad denominada Angiostrongilosis abdominal, causada por un parásito microscópico llamado Angiostrongylus o Morerastrongylus.

We usually hear nutritionists recommend good food washing. In the case of vegetables it is because many times, the tiny of the insects makes them go unnoticed. The small pests called slugs produce the disease called Angiostrongilosis caused by a microscopic parasite called Angiostrongylus or Morerastrongylus.

Los Angiostrongylus son parásitos de las ratas (gusano del pulmón de la rata). Las larvas excretadas son ingeridas por huéspedes intermediarios (caracoles y babosas) y por huéspedes paraténicos o de transporte (huéspedes que no son necesarios para el desarrollo del parásito pero que pueden trasmitir la infección al ser humano). Para nosotros los inexpertos el término puede no ser familiar sin embargo, al hablarnos de meningitis si asociaríamos el término con esa grave y peligrosa enfermedad.

For us inexperienced people the term may not be familiar, however, when talking about meningitis if we would associate the term with that serious and dangerous disease.

No todas las plantas son susceptibles a ser atacadas por las babosas, las hortalizas son su comida y lugares favoritos sobre todo, aquellas que crecen con hojas en capas como la lechuga, ajoporro, acelgas, incluso entre el brócoli o coliflor suelen hallarse.

Not all the plants are susceptible to be attacked by the slugs, the vegetables are their food and favorite places especially, those that grow with leaves in layers like the lettuce, garlic, chard, even between the broccoli or cauliflower usually are found.

Prudencia, lavemos bien nuestros alimentos, revisemos hoja por hoja esas hortalizas porque las babas son habilidosas para esconderse.

Prudence, let's wash our food well, let's check those vegetables leaf by leaf because the slime is skilful at hiding.
