Sibyl Wetasinghe, a Sri Lankan artist and writer, translated her most famous work, Kuda Hora (Umbrella Thief) into ten languages, including Norwegian, Chinese and Japanese.The umbrella thief was actually one of my favorite books in my book collection when I was little.

As for her personal life, Born in 1927, she spent the first few years of her childhood in Galle and started her primary education in Colombo when she was 6 years old.
She started her career as a journalist at the age of 17 and joined the Lankadeepa newspaper, which was published in Sinhala.

Wettasinghe then joined Lake House Publications, a popular company, where she became the lead example for the Janatha newspaper. She also became the first Sri Lankan woman to work full time as a journalist in Sri Lanka. It is safe to say that her entry into Lake House opened the door for her to pursue a career in journalism. She has also written and illustrated for the Sunday Observer, Silumina, Daily News and sarasaviya published by the agency.

It was while working for the Janatha newspaper that a new dimension in her life began. That is, Wettasinghe tried to write her first story and as a result she published a narrative for the children's page of the newspaper called" kuda hora "(the Umbrella Thief). The story became so popular among child readers that it eventually went on to translate into a book that was critically
acclaimed locally and internationally. Inspired by the success of the children's book "Kuda Hora", she became interested in writing and illustrating more children's stories, and as a result of her career she has written and published over 200 children's books.

This story caught the attention of young and old in Sri Lanka and was a huge success. As a result, the book was translated into English, Korean, and other foreign languages. The book, translated into Japanese, also won the Japanese Library Association Award for Most Popular Children's Book.

After that, Wetasinghe, a talented model, held regular exhibitions in Japan. There, she was able to continue to win awards for the quality of her books.

Sibyl Wetasinghe, a great writer, died on the 2020 July 1 (92) due to complications related to old age. But there will be a legacy of beautiful stories she wrote for children.
