The Deputy Regent of Bireuen Regency, Aceh Province, Ir. H. Razuardi, MT, sent off 164 students from the National Islamic University of Indonesia (UNIKI) to participate in the Thematic Student Work Experience (KKM) program in five flood-affected districts on Tuesday morning (December 23, 2025) at the local campus.
In his remarks, the Deputy Regent of Bireuen Regency, Ir. H. Razuardi, MT, stated that, as is known, Bireuen Regency is currently facing a flash flood disaster that has hit several districts and villages.
This disaster has not only caused damage to the environment and public facilities, but also had a direct impact on the social and economic life of the community. In these circumstances, the presence of KKM students in the community is highly relevant and needed.
According to him, this KKM program is not only about fulfilling academic obligations, but also a tangible form of concern, empathy, and community service.
KKM students can play an active role, including assisting with social and humanitarian activities for flood-affected communities, according to their abilities and coordination in the field. They can also educate the public on environmental cleanliness, post-flood health, and disease prevention.
They can also assist in simple data collection on community and environmental conditions to support recovery efforts. They can also mobilize community service activities, clean public facilities, and strengthen social solidarity. They can also develop KKM programs that are adaptive to the conditions of the village or hamlet where they are assigned.
"I hope KKM students can become agents of change, bringing a positive spirit, knowledge, and a polite and humble attitude to the community," said the Deputy Regent.
Previously, the Committee Chair and Vice Rector III of UNIKI Bireuen, Dr. H. Kamaruddin, S.Pd, MM., CRP., CFRM, stated in his report that the KKM program will last 10 days, with each hamlet being held one day at a time.
The activity aimed to clean the homes of underprivileged residents who were severely affected, as well as community facilities, using various tools such as wheelbarrows, shovels, hoes, brooms, buckets, and other equipment, along with disinfectants provided by the Bireuen Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD).
The locations for the Thematic KKM activities were Jeumpa District, Blang Rheum and Meuligoe Villages; Peudada District, Leuboek Naleung and Puloe Villages; Kuala District, Weu Jangka and Kareung Villages; Peusangan District, Pante Gajah Village; Kutablang District, Meusee and Imbude Villages, he explained.
The Rector of UNIKI Bireuen, Dr. Zainuddin Iba, SE., MSi, stated that this activity demonstrated UNIKI students' concrete involvement in helping the community, as well as embodying the Tri Dharma of Higher Education: education, research, and community service.
"Students are expected to uphold the good name of UNIKI, respect the local culture and customs, and carry out their duties with full responsibility, discipline, and a spirit of service," he concluded.
Meanwhile, the Chair of the Bireuen National Foundation, Dr. H. Amiruddin Idris, stated that since the third day after the flash flood disaster, 70 UNIKI students have joined the Bireuen main post.
They were at the post during the critical first week, assisting the government in delivering aid to disaster-affected communities in areas that were still unreachable at the time, he explained.
Today, UNIKI is making a real contribution through the Thematic Student Creativity Program (KKM) and hopes to achieve greater results. "If this KKM is beneficial to the community after evaluation, more subsequent classes will participate," said Amiruddin, also a member of the Aceh House of Representatives.
