So many friends of mine are going through some form of childhood trauma. And for a lot of them, their trauma is not physical abuse, it's emotional manipulation that brought them so much pain. We have no control over what anyone would say to us but we can control what we do about what they said to us. A lot of those friends let words stick to them like mud on shoes.

When someone says something negative about what they are doing, they feel like everyone is against them. If you look at a plant, it take in all kinds of water, and it doesn't care if the water is dirty or contaminated. It grows no matter what the obstacles are. In other words, we should take in what people say about us, both the good and the bad, and use it to motivate ourselves.

You can argue that we're not plants and bottling things up is bad for you in the long run but I never said anything about having to bottle it up. When you take in the negative criticism or remark, don't allow that to define you, but use that to find out which weakness you had that that person was able to exploit to be able to say what he or she said to you.

People will talk. Some say hurtful things and are trying to put you down, and some people say hurtful things simply because of ignorance. Regardless of the reason, you do not have to carry their word. Once you allow someone else's words to dictate how far you will go, you have already lost your power. You can acknowledge the word or even learn from it, but you have the option to let the word sit in you and destroy your motivation or not at all. You decide if it will nourish you or just leave a stain in your life forever.

It is the smallest things that show us that no one needs perfect conditions to grow. A weed can break through a sidewalk just to keep growing, a flower can push through the small hole it found in a concrete.

I try to not let circumstances or other people dictate my pace or trajectory and slowly I am growing no matter if I have muddy water or loved ones celebrate my success with standing ovations or not. Each person I encounter can say I am messy or I'm too slow or I am not ready or it just wasn't meant for me. All things considered I am not going to stop or be held back by the comments I receive from others. My roots are going to continue to grow no matter the conditions that I have water from and my leaves are going to continue to grow towards the sun.

There is no reason to let anyone else's comment impede your ability to grow, so keep growing, accept everything that you hear as your proof of all that you have accomplished and all that you will accomplish no matter what music is being played around you.
