Melvin's Last Song

It felt like time was slowing down, but the music remained the same. A perfect loop. I was standing in a corner with my mouth hanging open, holding an empty cup and drunkenly swaying in the breeze. I burped. Most of the crowd had scattered, besides a few other drunks and a group of ugly girls, standing on the opposite site of the dancefloor. They made a point out of crossing their arms in frustration, but mostly unnoticed. Occasionally one would turn into another one's ear and mumble something intelligible, then they all would make a face like someone farted.

The lightshow was still going strong. There was this stubborn weirdo dancing all by himself. Tall guy, white hair, but he didn't look old. At least I thought so. I took another sip and narrowed my eyes. His movements were strangely hypnotic, in a way that was hard to describe. At first it looked like there was no rhyme or reason to his performance, but on closer inspection it almost looked like a kata, or some form of ritualistic dance with a purpose. One of those polynesian things that tell a story, maybe.

For a second it got insanely bright and I had to shield my squinty eyes, like I was staring at the sun. Before I could say wtf everything turned back to normal. Did someone just point a spotlight at me? Well, this was weird. Meanwhile the guy was still dancing, without a care in the world and his antics getting worse. I swear at one point he was throwing a fist full of loose change into the air, like some sort of coin rain bouncing around on the floor, but then I'd blink and the coins were gone.

He had this wide grin on his face and I instantly felt like he was watching me from the corner of his eye. I looked at my cup and wondered about someone spiking my drink, then I looked up again and noticed his hair color had changed. Now it was a dark steely blue, the kind of unnatural hair color you'd instantly notice as some sort of dye. He looked a bit like he was color inverted. I rubbed my eyes and the illusion was gone, again. Yeah, looks like I've been drugged. Just play it cool, don't give him the satisfaction of knowing it might be getting to me, I told myself.

I started experiencing a series of deja vus. Didn't that guy over there walk through that door a minute ago? When did I get another drink? Something was going on, and I didn't feel good about it. The music sounded like it was about to peak. "The last song for today", a crackly voice announced over the speaker system . The white haired guy was slowly raising his arms to the ceiling and, doing jazz hands it seemed. That's when the strobe light kicked in and got increasingly faster and faster. Then... woosh! I was gone.

The music had stopped. I was standing among green hills looking up to the sky. Somewhere in the distance I could see him, the white haired guy, flying across the horizon with his arms spread out like wings. He did a few loopings and then woosh again. I was back at the club, but the lightshow had stopped. All the other patreon's were gone and the only person left but me was a staff member with a broom. "Time to go home", he said. "But what about the white haired guy!?" He looked at me funny and smiled before shaking his head.

Sort:

I like that... The man who doesn't dance with or for anyone, but is completely absorbed in the music.

Overexplaining stuff is probably bad form and ruins the "fun" but there's more to it, in theory at least. That said, I kinda doubt grebmot's semi-anonymous shitposts run risk of becoming the subject of future academical discussions, so it doesn't really matter anyhow:

The basic idea was the good old "life might be a simulation" trope and applying the concept of an arbritary code injection/executions, like treating life like a video game. So the white hair guy is actually a computer programmer who manages to use his skillset to alter the fabric of reality itself, basically through a set of very specific actions. In particular that kind of "show me the dance of your people" thing he has going on. The rolling green hils for that matter were just a reference to the original windows xp wallpaper.

This explains the idea (I'm sure I butchered it):

Nerd dork territory, I suppose :-)

Okay, so grebmot is a nerd ;-)) I didn't think of this possible parallel, I'm happy to admit...

Windows XP... I liked it a lot! Among other things, I have an old laptop that still runs on it ;-))

By the way, the fact that I like the picture I imagined doesn't change!

I mean, if it works it works. Just don't connect it to the internet.

That venn diagram isn't exactly scientific but I'd say I'm more like a dork rather than a nerd. Or some kind of unholy something or other too horrible to classify beyond the DSM-5.

Look at me rambling again. Either way, thanks for replying! I'm just happy someone is reading my stuff without me having to put a gun to their head ;-)

I think we can always find a level on which we can meet ;-))

Never meet your heroes!
