This fiction needs an ending
Ashfield was an ordinary town, at least on the surface. There was always something just a little off about ashfield. There was a darkness that penetrated every corner of the town. Darkness settled in under the watchful eye of Ashfield sanatorium.
The building looked over the town exuding authority. The windows were looking like a hundred eyes watching the people below. It was no secret in town that there was evil in those walls. Some even said that the warden built it on the iron dais. Whatever the case, the building poured its darkness for every being and beast to see. The thicket seemed to remind anyone that there was only a single way out of ashfield.
A way the people knew all too well. Silence was the feared but welcomed friend. It was so familiar with ashfield the people had basically become numb to it. They knew that if you lived long enough you'd end up in the warden's custody, but few ever made it that far.
Mateo sat staring up at the imposing building. It was his constant, never changing companion. The walls of his cell made him feel safe even though his body still shivered from the fear. The moon cast shadows on the grounds and turned them into a nightmare. The stillness in the air made it clear that something was coming. He knew it was never good things that came with the harvest moon. He wondered if Hugo felt it too, if his brother even cared anymore.
He was too fixated to sleep, but too tired to understand the world this way. The room looked like it was breathing with him in the darkness. Every sound amplified when it reverberated in the place. The sound of many breaths breathing as a single. He knew the harvest moon meant that before the first frost fell there would be less of them.
He wasn't sure how he knew, but he could feel it. He could feel it in his bones.
Not the end but in the comments what would happen to Mateo.
