The dance/ El baile

Dancing has been present among human beings since the world began, both to accompany certain sacred ceremonies and for festive celebrations of some event with special significance. In the Bible, when we find references to dance, its meaning, most of the time, is associated with these two aspects mentioned above. This activity, which will always be subordinated to singing or music, as its natural companions, does not reflect in the sacred book the exclusive component, focused on pure amusement, which it acquired later and which has reached our days. That is to say, we will not find in the Bible pairs of independent dancers, whose only purpose is the pleasurable recreation.

The dance, within its own guidelines, in itself, does not contain any negative manifestation, which offends the precepts dictated by God or the correct norms of human behavior. It is a series of bodily movements that, like so many things in life, can express the most sublime messages or emit signals that stray from the paths traced by morals and good manners. The latter, more than anything else, is what we have observed in these times when we have happened to watch young people dancing in any place with ostensible carelessness. We have noticed, with certain astonishment, that their unbridled movements are centered, without any modesty, in obscene provocation, in a licentious lasciviousness that ostensibly disdains our evolution as a society dedicated, with a creative spirit, to the welfare of humanity; in a continuous insinuation of sexual activity that frankly does not seem that they are dancing, but that they are performing a primitive mating ritual, a shameless exhibition of their insolent aptitudes.

Dancing, on the other hand, is an art that has evolved over time towards a delicate beauty; it is a profession that demands dedication and discipline to achieve mastery; it is a refined feeling in which the expressions of the body harmonize in the most sublime way possible with the beats of the music. And it is the latter, undoubtedly, the main characteristic of this activity, the rhythmic balance between the melody and the steps that are folded with skill to the cadence of that melody.

However, in the youth and informal dances that we have witnessed, this condition of correspondence between music and movements of the dancers seems to have been set aside to give priority to the sycallyptic insinuations, which are, most of the time, completely divorced from the rhythm of the melody. In the face of all this, one wonders if what we are witnessing can truly be called dance or if it is just another wretched form of degeneration that takes advantage of degeneration to distort the most delicate human expressions.

El baile ha estado presente entre los seres humanos desde que el mundo es mundo, tanto para acompañar ciertas ceremonias sagradas como para las festivas celebraciones de algún evento con significado especial. En la Biblia, cuando encontramos referencias a la danza, al baile, su significado, la mayoría de las veces, está asociado a estos dos aspectos que nombramos anteriormente. Esta actividad, que siempre irá supeditada al canto o a la música, como sus acompañantes naturales, no refleja en el libro sagrado el componente exclusivo, centrado en la pura diversión, que adquirió después y que ha llegado hasta nuestros días. Es decir, no encontraremos en la Biblia parejas de danzantes independientes, cuyo único propósito sea el placentero esparcimiento.

El baile, dentro de sus lineamientos propios, en sí mismo, no encierra ninguna manifestación negativa, que ofenda los preceptos dictados por Dios o las correctas normas del comportamiento humano. Se trata de una serie de movimientos corporales que, al igual que tantas cosas en la vida, puede expresar los más sublimes mensajes o emitir señales que se alejan de los caminos trazados por la moral y las buenas costumbres. Esto último, más que todo, es lo que hemos observado en estos tiempos cuando nos ha tocado, por casualidad, mirar bailando a los jóvenes que danzan en cualquier sitio con ostensible despreocupación. Hemos advertido, con cierto estupor, que sus movimientos desenfrenados se centran, sin pudor alguno, en la provocación obscena, en una licenciosa lascivia que desdice ostensiblemente de nuestra evolución como sociedad abocada, con espíritu creador, al bienestar de la humanidad; en una continua insinuación de la actividad sexual que francamente no pareciera que están bailando, sino que se encuentran ejecutando un primitivo ritual de apareamiento, de una exhibición desvergonzada de sus insolentes aptitudes.

El baile se trata, por otra parte, de un arte que ha evolucionado con el tiempo hacia una delicada belleza; es una profesión que exige dedicación y disciplina para alcanzar su dominio; es un depurado sentimiento en el que las expresiones del cuerpo armonizan de la forma más sublime posible con los compases de la música. Y es esto último, sin lugar a dudas, la principal característica de esta actividad, el equilibrio rítmico entre la melodía y los pasos que se pliegan con destreza a la cadencia de esa melodía.

Sin embargo, en los bailes juveniles e informales que hemos presenciado, esa condición de correspondencia entre música y movimientos de los bailadores pareciera que la echaron a un lado para darles prioridad a las insinuaciones sicalípticas, las cuales están, la mayoría de las veces, divorciadas completamente del ritmo que marca la melodía. Ante todo esto, cabe preguntarse si lo que presenciamos en verdad se puede llamar baile o es otra desdichada forma que aprovecha la degeneración para desvirtuar las más delicadas expresiones humanas.
