Christ, the final sacrifice for sin
Hebrews 9:23-28 KJV
[23] It was therefore necessary that the patterns of things in the heavens should be purified with these; but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these. [24] For Christ is not entered into the holy places made with hands, which are the figures of the true; but into heaven itself, now to appear in the presence of God for us: [25] Nor yet that he should offer himself often, as the high priest entereth into the holy place every year with blood of others; [26] For then must he often have suffered since the foundation of the world: but now once in the end of the world hath he appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. [27] And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: [28] So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.
The only constant thing in life is change. Unfortunately, we human beings are averse to change most times. Change becomes a difficult thing once people get used to a particular way of doing things. The truth is that it may be sometimes costly when we stick to the old way of doing things. This was the case of the Hebrew Christian who were the original recipient of this letter.
The Hebrew believers then undermined the wholeness of the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for sin, believing in the ceremonies and rituals of the Old Testament in relating with God. This was frowned at by the author of Hebrew, explaining that the sacrifices offered in the Old Testament already proofs that they are inadequate to take away sin permanently due to the repetitive nature.
Christ shed His blood once and for all, this put an end to the burden of repeating sacrifice year after year because blood was still necessary for the forgiveness of sin in the new covenant. The death of Jesus Christ is the final sacrifice for the sin of the whole world. As it was necessary for purification before entering the earthly sanctuary in the Old Testament, so, it is of necessity to be purified and justified with better sacrifice to enter heaven. Christ has paid the price for our sins.
All of the religious rituals including the priesthood and the sacrifices found their fulfillment in Jesus Christ. We must trust Christ alone for salvation in order to escape God’s judgment. Trusting in anyone or anything else is a recipe for condemnation.
Christ paid it all at once. Jesus’ blood has atoned for our sins. Turn the things the devil is using to condemn you to God. May God help us to understand and appropriate His eternal sacrifice for us. Amen.
