Faced with discouragement for life, hopelessness, existential sadness, pain for sin, faced with these and many other burdens, there is an answer; Jesus. He, with his Word, feeds and comforts us, purifies us, strengthens us and shelters us in his love and his grace, for this reason he, who is the way, the truth and the life (Jn 14: 6), He tells us like this:

"Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." (Mt 11, 29-30 )

    "Take my yoke upon you..." The yoke is an elongated piece of wood with two arches that is placed on the head or neck of the animals, it is generally used to join two oxen or mules, so that these animals synchronize their gait and concentrate their efforts in the same direction, when one tries to stop the other, with its own gait, it pushes it to continue. The word yoke, in another sense, comes to mean something that is detestable; the oppression that one or more people exert despotically on others.

    Knowing these things, it must be said that the yoke of which the Lord speaks to us is not that of despotic oppression, in any case, it denounces it. In Jesus' time, the issue of taxes and tributes was a scandalous and rude thing, the people were an exploited and oppressed people, they paid taxes to the king, the temple and finally the Roman empire. In this context of things, Jesus calls those of his time and those of today to voluntarily assume his yoke, which is other than the yoke of love.

"A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; even as I have loved you, that ye also love one another." (Jn 13, 34)

    Thus, in contrast to the oppressive yoke, Jesus presents us with the liberating yoke of love that unites us so that united, we synchronize the march, we concentrate forces to do good and, at the same time, we encourage each other to not stop our march or give up the way of Christ; the way of truth and life.

    "... and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart..." In this sentence the Lord invites us not only to remove from us the pride, arrogance and violence typical of the despotic oppressor, he also invites us to put all our trust in God, and not in ourselves as the proud of heart usually do.

    "... and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light." By looking at and understanding reality from the perspective of love, the soul finds peace and rest. Pride, greed, hatred and resentment can only disturb, destroy, and generate unhappiness in the heart ... But instead love pacifies, purifies and renews everything from its fruits; forgiveness, joy and understanding. The yoke of the world is imposed on us either with violence or with deception or both; the burden is sin, suffering, and slavery in its many forms. Instead, the yoke and burden that Jesus presents to us is willingly accepted and leads to salvation; both the yoke and the burden are summed up in the same word, love; the love that unites us and makes us be aware of helping, encouraging and seeking the good of our neighbor, the common good. That is why there is no better yoke and burden than the yoke and burden of Jesus, who, more than being those two things, is love.

SPANISH VERSION

    Ante el desánimo por la vida, la desesperanza, la tristeza existencial, el dolor por el pecado, ante estas y muchas otras cargas, hay una respuesta; Jesús. Él, con Su Palabra nos alimenta y reconforta, nos purifica, nos fortalece y nos cobija en su amor y su gracia, por eso Él, que es el camino, la verdad y la vida (Jn 14, 6), nos lo dice así:

"Llevad mi yugo sobre vosotros, y aprended de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón; y hallaréis descanso para vuestras almas; porque mi yugo es fácil, y ligera mi carga" (Mt 11, 29-30)

    "Llevad mi yugo sobre vosotros..." El yugo es una pieza alargada de madera con dos arcos que se coloca sobre la cabeza o el cuello de los animales, se utiliza generalmente para unir dos bueyes o mulas, a fin de que estos animales sincronicen su marcha y concentren sus esfuerzos en una misma dirección, cuando uno intenta parar el otro, con su propio andar, lo empuja a continuar. La palabra yugo, en otra acepción, viene a significar algo que es detestable; la opresión que una o varias personas ejercen despóticamente sobre otras.

    Sabiendo estas cosas hay que decir que el yugo del que nos habla el Señor, no es el de la opresión despótica, en todo caso, la denuncia. Además de la rigidez cultual judía, en tiempos de Jesús, el tema de los impuestos y tributos era una cosa escandalosa y grosera, el pueblo era un pueblo explotado y oprimido, pagaba impuestos al rey, al templo y finalmente al imperio romano. En este contexto de cosas Jesús llama a los de su tiempo y a los de ahora a asumir voluntariamente Su yugo, que nos es otro que el yugo del amor.

"Un mandamiento nuevo os doy: Que os améis unos a otros; como yo os he amado, que también os améis unos a otros." (Jn 13, 34)

    Así, en contraste con el yugo opresor, Jesús nos presenta el yugo liberador del amor que nos junta a fin de que unidos, sincronicemos la marcha, concentremos fuerzas para hacer el bien y, a la vez, nos demos ánimo los unos a otros para no detener nuestra marcha ni desistir del camino de Cristo; el camino de la verdad y de la vida.

    "Y aprended de mí, que soy manso y humilde de corazón..." En esta frase el Señor nos invita no sólo a sacar de nosotros el orgullo, la arrogancia y la violencia propia del opresor despótico, también nos invita a poner toda nuestra confianza en Dios, y no en nosotros mismos como suelen hacer los soberbios de corazón.

    "... y hallaréis descanso para vuestras almas; porque mi yugo es fácil, y ligera mi carga." Al mirar y comprender la realidad desde la perspectiva del amor, el alma encuentra paz y descanso. La soberbia, la codicia, el odio y el resentimiento solo pueden turbar, destruir, y generar infelicidad en el corazón... Pero en cambio el amor pacifica, purifica y lo renueva todo desde sus frutos; el perdón, la alegría y la compresión. El yugo del mundo se nos impone o con violencia o con engaño o ambas; la carga es el pecado, el sufrimiento y la esclavitud en sus múltiples formas. En cambio, el yugo y la carga que Jesús nos presenta se acoge voluntariamente y conduce a la salvación; tanto el yugo como la carga se resumen en una misma palabra, amor; el amor que nos une y nos hace estar pendientes de ayudar, de animar y de procurar el bien del prójimo, el bien común. Por eso no hay mejor yugo y carga que el yugo y la carga de Jesús, que más que ser esas dos cosas, es amor.

    Que el Espíritu Santo inspire en nosotros todo lo bueno que de Él procede. Amén.
