Estrategia y táctica de La Batalla del Abismo de Helm (la película). / Strategy and tactics from The Battle of Helm's Deep (the film)

Cuando se me viene a la mente algunas de las escenas o secuencias de acción bélica más importantes del cine, sin duda alguna esta es una de las que pasa por mi mente son las escenas de la obra cinematográfica de Señor de los Anillos Las Dos Torres, concretamente la de la Batalla en el Abismo de Helm.

When some of the most important scenes or sequences of warlike action in cinema come to mind, without a doubt this is one of the ones that passes through my mind are the scenes of the film Lord of the Rings The Two Towers, specifically that of the Battle of Helm's Deep.

Recuerdo cuando la vi de niño, en ese momento la tensión era insoportable, y la sensación de que no había forma de salir con vida de aquel infierno me atormentaba, me sorprendió sobremanera, el primer vistazo que le di porque para esa época no recordaba unas escenas de guerra tan épicas en el cine. Esta batalla creó yo es una de las más importantes del cine y la televisión… y no como otras por ahí.

I remember when I saw her as a child, at that time the tension was unbearable, and the feeling that there was no way out of that hell alive tormented me, I was very surprised, the first glimpse I gave her because for that time she did not remember such epic war scenes in the movies. This battle I created is one of the most important in cinema and television... and not like others out there.

Hoy me gustaría compartir con ustedes un pequeño análisis sobre la táctica y la estrategia de esta batalla y que tan “real” o congruente es, personalmente es una de mis batallas cinematográficas favoritas. Quiero recalcar que solamente hablaré de la batalla que presenciamos en las películas dirigidas por Peter Jackson, la batalla del Abismo de Helm que tiene lugar en los libros es un tanto diferente a la de la versión cinematográfica y por lo menos en este momento hablaremos de esta última.

Today I would like to share with you a little analysis about the tactics and strategy of this battle and how "real" or congruent it is, personally it is one of my favorite cinematic battles. I would like to emphasize that I will only talk about the battle that we witness in the films directed by Peter Jackson, the battle of Helm's Deep that takes place in the books is somewhat different from the film version and at least at this time we will talk about the latter.

La calma antes de la tormenta antecedentes del combate. / The calm before the storm precedes the combat.

Antes de hablar de la batalla en sí misma me gustaría ponerlos en contexto de como la historia nos trajo hasta este punto. Luego de que Aragorn, Legolas y Gimli salieran de Amon Hen y llegaran hasta la región del Rhovannion en busca de Pippin y Merry los cuales fueron capturados por un grupo de Uruks-Hai, se topan de manera sorpresiva con Gandalf ahora convertido en Gandalf en Blanco, este les comenta que no hay que preocuparse por los hobbits y que hay otros asuntos que atender.

Before talking about the battle itself I would like to put them in context of how history brought us to this point. After Aragorn, Legolas and Gimli had left Amon Hen and reached the Rhovannion region in search of Pippin and Merry who were captured by a group of Uruks-Hai, they came across Gandalf, now a Gandalf in White, who told them not to worry about the Hobbits and that there were other matters to attend to.

Nuestros héroes se dirigen entonces hasta Edoras, la ciudad principal del reino de Rohan, guiados por Gandalf, allí logran liberar al rey Theoden que estaba preso bajo un hechizo de Saruman, este al darse cuenta que la guerra está en curso, que los orcos de Saruman y los salvajes han comenzado a saquear aldeas bajo su protección pide consejo a gandalf sobre lo que debería hacer.

Our heroes then go to Edoras, the main city of the kingdom of Rohan, guided by Gandalf, there they manage to free the king Theoden who was imprisoned under a spell of Saruman, the latter realizing that the war is underway, that Saruman's orcs and savages have started plundering villages under his protection and ask gandalf for advice on what he should do.

Viendo la situación en la que se encuentra, superado ampliamente en número, sin sus mejores soldados, sin aliados inmediatos escaso de recurso; Theoden el Rey de Rohan decide partir con todo sus soldados y su pueblo al Abismo de Helm, el último bastión de Rohan, está acompañado por Legolas, Gimli y Aragorn pero Gandalf el cual piensa que refugiarse en aquel sitio no es una buena idea, toma a Sombra Gris y abandona Edoras en busca de ayuda, le dice a Aragorn que espere su llegada con la primera luz del quinto día, hasta ese entonces deberán resistir solos. Saruman se entera de la marcha del rey dicha fortaleza y prepara un gran ejercito de Uruk-Hai para asediar el Abismo de Helm y acabar con todo hombre, mujer y niño que se encuentre tras sus murallas, Theoden viendo que la batalla es inminente y posiblemente también la derrota, junta a todos las mujeres y niños y los esconde en las cavernas de la fortaleza y ordena que todo hombre que pueda sostener una espada y tenga edad para pelear se presente en las armerías.

Seeing the situation in which it finds itself, vastly outnumbered, without its best soldiers, without immediate allies who are scarce in resources; Theoden, the King of Rohan, decides to leave with all his soldiers and his people to Helm's Deep, the last bastion of Rohan, and is accompanied by Legolas, Gimli and Aragorn, but Gandalf, who thinks that to take refuge in that place is not a good idea, takes the Grey Shadow and leaves Edoras in search of help, tells Aragorn to wait for his arrival with the first light of the fifth day, until then they must resist alone. Saruman learns about the march of the king of the said fortress and prepares a great army of Uruk-Hai to besiege the Helm's Deep and to finish with every man, woman and child behind its walls; Theoden, seeing that the battle is imminent and possibly also the defeat, gathers all women and children and hides them in the caverns of the fortress, and orders that every man that can hold a sword and is old enough to fight, should appear in the armouries.

La batalla está a punto de comenzar, sin embargo y cuando los hombres habían perdido la esperanza se escucha un llamado a la puerta, un ejército bien armado de elfos de Lórien llega horas antes de que los orcos y se disponen a prepararse junto a los Rohirrin para el golpe de Isengard.

The battle is about to begin, however, and when the men had lost hope a knock is heard at the door, a well-armed army of elves from Lorien arrives hours before the orcs and prepare themselves together with the Rohirrin for the coup of Isengard.

Los números y los contendientes. / The numbers and the contestants.

Comencemos con el lado del ejercito del bien o para efectos prácticos de este post, el ejército defensor;

Let's start with the army side of the good or for practical purposes of this post, the defending army;

Fuerzas combinadas de rohirrin y galadhrim. / Combined forces of rohirrin and galadhrim.

En este ejército contamos con alrededor de trecientos (300) soldados rohirrin de infantería comandados por su rey Théoden, aquí tengo que hacer una ligera inciso; no se nos menciona con precisión si son trecientos soldados contando a los jóvenes campesinos reclutados en última instancia para defender la fortaleza o si son trescientos soldados (300) y adicional a ello los campesinos reclutados, de lo que estamos seguros es que el número de efectivos por parte de Rohan para defender el Abismo es más o menos este pues Legolas mientras se están preparando para la lucha afirma con pesar que trecientos soldados de los cuales algunos no han tomado nunca una espada no serán rivales para los orcos.

In this army we have about three hundred (300) rohirrin infantry soldiers commanded by their king Théoden, here I have to make a slight aside; We are not mentioned precisely if they are three hundred soldiers counting the young peasants ultimately recruited to defend the fortress or if they are three hundred soldiers (300) and in addition to that the peasants recruited, of which we are sure that the number of troops on Rohan's side to defend the Abyss is more or less this as Legolas while preparing for the fight states with regret that three hundred soldiers of which some have never taken up a sword will not be rivals for the orcs.

Su armamento es muy variado, pero por lo que se ve en la película, la mayoría de soldados, al menos los que tuvieron experiencia en combate están equipados con cota de malla, armaduras de placas de acero, lanzas espadas, escudos, algunos campesinos solo llevan petos de cuero, hachas o espadas cortas, al menos esto es lo que nos deja entre ver la película.

Their armament is very varied, but from what we see in the film, most soldiers, at least those who had combat experience are equipped with chain mail, steel plate armor, sword lances, shields, some peasants only carry leather dungarees, axes or short swords, at least this is what the film leaves us with.

El ejército defensor cuenta con la inesperada ayuda de los Galadhrim, provenientes de Lothlorien, al igual que con los rohirrin, tampoco conocemos el número exacto de estos soldados, pero según algunos portales se cree que ronda los doscientos cincuenta (250) o trecientos soldados cuando mucho, a pesar de ser menores en número están mucho mejor equipados, cada soldado está equipado con un arco largo y adicional a ello cuentan con una espada larga. La película nos da a entender que parecen bastante disciplinados y llevan armadura equipamiento de armadura que por lo que se puede ver podríamos decir que es armadura pesada.

Adicional a ello y esta vez sí… no como en otras recreaciones de batallas. La fortaleza se usa así que la contaré como un factor del lado del ejercito defensor. La fortaleza a primera vista y según lo que nos relatan en la película, es inexpugnable. El Abismo de Helm no ha conocido ejercito capaz de conquistarlo, cuenta con una larga muralla exterior, la entrada principal esta antecedida por un estrecho corredor con una anchura de tres hombres de distancia, tras la entrada principal un gran corredor y luego un estrecho pasillo seguido por otra muralla, y luego el castillo de Cuernavilla. Parece que la fortaleza tiene todo para aguantar una gran embestida.

In addition to that and this time yes... not like in other battle recreations. The fortress is used so I will count it as a factor on the side of the defending army. Los Uruk-Hai de Isengard. / The Uruk-Hai of Isengard

De lado de Isengard o para efectos prácticos el ejército invasor está compuesto por aproximadamente diez mil (10.000) soldados Uruk-Hai, todos armados con espadas, lanzas y ballestas, picas, alabardas y sarisas que son lanzas increíblemente largas, unos siete o cinco metros de diámetro. Parecen ser muy disciplinados, son bastante resistentes y su armadura es pesada. Sabemos el número exacto porque tanto Saruman como Aragorn nos lo mencionan en la película.

On the side of Isengard or for practical purposes the invading army is composed of approximately ten thousand (10,000) Uruk-Hai soldiers, all armed with swords, spears and crossbows, pikes, halberds and saris which are incredibly long spears, about seven or five meters in diameter. They seem to be very disciplined, they are quite resistant and their armor is heavy. We know the exact number because both Saruman and Aragorn mention it to us in the film.

Adicional a ello cuentan con artillería, llevan consigo arietes, enormes balistas y escaleras manuales, así como también unas escaleras muy grandes capaces de anclarse a las murallas por medio de dichas balistas.

In addition, they have artillery, carry battering rams, enormous ballistas and manual stairs, as well as very large stairs capable of being anchored to the walls by means of these ballistas.

Desarrollo y análisis de la batalla. / Development and analysis of the battle.

A la defensiva. / On the defensive.

Ahora sí, vamos a lo bueno… La batalla en líneas generales está muy bien recreada, la defensa del ejercito defensor es bastante eficiente y correcta, ¿Tienes una muralla? Úsala entonces, el ejército defensor hace lo posible por defender la posición lo mayor posible. El posicionamiento de las tropas también me parece acertado dentro de lo que cabe, tomando en cuenta el poco tiempo que tuvieron para prepararse;

Now, let's get to the good stuff... The battle in general lines is very well recreated, the defense of the defending army is quite efficient and correct, do you have a wall? Use it then, the defending army does its best to defend the position as much as possible. The positioning of the troops also seems to me to be correct within what is possible, taking into account the little time they had to prepare;

Los elfos que en este caso vendrían siendo la elite del ejército defensor se situaron a lo largo del muro exterior y una pequeña parte tras el muro para brindar apoyo junto a ellos se encuentran Gimli, Aragorn y Legolas junto a Haldir el cual es el capitán del destacamento de elfos, esta podríamos decir es la primera y principal línea de defensa y la que se encargará de absorber la mayor cantidad de daño.

The elves that in this case would come to be the elite of the defending army were located along the outer wall and a small part behind the wall to provide support along with them are Gimli, Aragorn and Legolas next to Haldir who is the captain of the detachment of elves, this we could say is the first and main line of defense and the one that will absorb the most damage.

En el lado de la entrada principal en la cara de la muralla exterior se sitúan los guerreros rohirrin y por lo que se puede observar (en mi opinión) en primera línea se hallan los soldados experimentados, justo encima de la muralla, dentro del pasillo podemos observar algunos de estos guerreros y unos cuantos aldeanos que de ahora en adelante llamaremos milicianos. Justo detrás de la muralla exterior y la entrada al fuerte esta la muralla interior en donde se encuentra Théoden con su guardia real y algunos milicianos.

On the side of the main entrance on the face of the outer wall are located the Rohirrin warriors and so you can see (in my opinion) in the first line are the experienced soldiers, just above the wall, inside the corridor we can see some of these warriors and a few villagers who from now on we will call militia. Just behind the outer wall and the entrance to the fort there is the inner wall where Théoden with her royal guard and some militia officers are located.

Como dije antes el planteamiento defensivo está muy bien, pero hay en mi opinión un grave problema, la recreación de la batalla a pesar de ser increíble y muy buena no es perfecta, el mayor fallo que tiene es la fortaleza del Abismo de Helm en sí misma. Para empezar ¿Quién carajos construyó esta fortaleza? A pesar de lo que muchos piensan la fortaleza del Abismo de Helm es muy ineficiente estructuralmente y todo un problema para defender, tal como dijo Gandalf es una trampa, una ratonera sin salida.

As I said before, the defensive approach is very good, but in my opinion there is a serious problem, the recreation of the battle in spite of being incredible and very good is not perfect, the biggest flaw it has is the strength of Helm's Deep itself. To begin with, who the hell built this fortress? In spite of what many think, the fortress of Helm's Deep is very inefficient structurally and a whole problem to defend, just as Gandalf said, it is a trap, a mousetrap with no way out.

El Abismo de Helm no era una fortaleza nada fácil de defender. / Helm's Deep was not an easy fortress to defend.

Las almenas que son los alientes rocosos encima de las murallas (toda muralla que se respete tiene buenas almenas), son demasiado pequeñas y dejan al descubierto el pecho y la cara de los tiradores, no solo eso, sino que tiene una forma muy particular como de rampa, esto podría hacer que las flechas enemigas disparadas desde el suelo por los atacantes que impactasen ese saliente se desviasen directamente a la cabeza de los arqueros defensor.

The battlements that are the rocky breaths above the walls (every wall that is respected has good battlements), are too small and leave the chest and face of the shooters uncovered, not only that, but it has a very particular shape as a ramp, this could make the enemy arrows shot from the ground by the attackers who hit that ledge deviate directly to the head of the defending archers.

El otro problema importante es la puerta principal de la fortaleza, es solo una puerta de madera y metal (aparentemente) y este problema lo tiene la ciudad de Minas Tirith también… Las fortalezas medievales en su gran mayoría cuentan con un sistema de doble puerta y enrejados de acero forjado de manera que, si se logra penetrar la primera puerta después de haber perdido a una gran cantidad de tropas, el invasor deberá tumbar una segunda puerta interna que seguramente será aún más difícil. Hay costillos que cuentan con puentes elevadizos, entradas con múltiples puertas, esas cosas no estaban puestas solo porque se veían bonitas, tenían una función y personalmente al Abismo de Helm le hubiera venido genial un sistema como este y una muralla más eficiente.

The other important problem is the main gate of the fortress, it is only a wooden and metal gate (apparently) and this problem is also faced by the city of Minas Tirith... Most medieval fortresses have a double gate system and forged steel grids so that if the first gate is penetrated after losing a large number of troops, the invader will have to knock down a second internal gate which will surely be even more difficult. There are ribs with elevated bridges, entrances with multiple gates; those things were not put there just because they looked nice, they had a function, and personally Helm's Deep would have benefited from a system like this and a more efficient wall.

Otra debilidad y creo que la más obvia era la enorme fisura que hacía de alcantarilla en la muralla exterior que es por donde los invasores crean la abertura en la muralla, El hecho de que solo un pequeño enrejado metálico fuera lo que cubriera esa gruta por donde pasaba un pequeño riachuelo no me cuadra, se pudo haber tapado con roca y piedra con el resto de la muralla.

Another weakness, and I think the most obvious one, was the enormous fissure that acted as a sewer in the exterior wall, which is where the invaders create the opening in the wall. The fact that only a small metal grille was covering that cave where a small stream passed does not fit me, it could have been covered with rock and stone with the rest of the wall.

La carga suicida de Aragorn y los Galadhrim. / Aragorn and Galadhrim's suicide charge.

Luego de horas intensas de lucha en la que los elfos defienden la parte más vulnerable de la fortaleza y se ven rápidamente abrumados por las escalas, fuego de proyectil enemigo y el ingente número de tropas, sufren el mayor de los golpes el cual es la apertura de la muralla exterior por parte de una especie de explosivo hecho por Saruman. Es justamente en este momento donde la batalla se pone muy cuesta arriba para los defensores, no solo parte de ejercito elfo queda aislado de la fortaleza, sino que el número de tropas que Isengard tiene en esa zona es enorme e imposible de contener si se dispersan.

After hours of intense fighting in which the elves defend the most vulnerable part of the fortress and are quickly overwhelmed by the scales, enemy shell fire and the huge number of troops, they suffer the biggest blow which is the opening of the outer wall by a kind of explosive made by Saruman. It is precisely at this moment where the battle becomes very uphill for the defenders, not only is part of the elven army isolated from the fortress, but the number of troops Isengard has in that area is enormous and impossible to contain if they are dispersed.

Sin embargo, los elfos que estaban tras la muralla entran en acción y comienzan a disparar un buen número de flechas que causan bastante daño a los atacantes que intentaron pasar por la apertura dejada en la muralla, lo que no entiendo es la razón por la que Aragorn ordena la carga de los Galadrhim a los Uruk-Hai, los Galadhrim apostados en esa parte no eran muchos, cuando muchos cien (100) soldados o menos, y los Uruk-Hai son miles, cada Galadrim debería enfrentar a diez invasores para defender efectivamente la posición, algo imposible por mas diestro con la espada que seas.

However, the elves that were behind the wall go into action and start shooting a good number of arrows that cause quite a bit of damage to the attackers that tried to pass through the opening left in the wall, what I don't understand is why Aragorn orders the Galadrhim to charge the Uruk-Hai, The Galadhrim posted in that part were not many, when many one hundred (100) soldiers or less, and the Uruk-Hai are thousands, each Galadrim should face ten invaders to effectively defend the position, something impossible no matter how skillful with the sword you are.

Personalmente creo que la opción de abrir fuego hacia la apertura de la muralla era correcta, los elfos son arqueros diestros, en la película vemos que son increíblemente veloces, disparan como si tuvieran una ametralladora. Yo hubiera ordenado fuego a discreción para asesinar a todos los que traten de pasar por el boquete de la muralla, se crearía un efecto cuello de botella, por más grande que sea el ejército invasor el agujero en la muralla tenía unos cinco o seis soldados de ancho cuando mucho, los elfos fácilmente podrían haber masacrado con una constante lluvia de flechas a cualquier que intentara pasar, son tiradores expertos, tienen la disciplina.

Personally I think that the option of opening fire towards the opening of the wall was correct, the elves are skilled archers, in the film we see that they are incredibly fast, they shoot as if they had a machine gun. I would have ordered fire at will to kill anyone who tried to pass through the hole in the wall, it would create a bottleneck effect, no matter how big the invading army was the hole in the wall had about five or six width soldiers at most, the elves could have easily massacred anyone who tried to pass with a constant shower of arrows, they are expert shooters, they have the discipline.

the rain of arrows would have created a corpse plug in the hole that would partially seal the wall making it very difficult to pass through, the Uruks would be forced to climb a huge slope of corpses surely slippery with blood while arrows rain down on them in bulk.

En el ataque. / In attack.

Sobre el ataque de los uruks no hay mucho que comentar en mi opinión, el despliegue fue impecable, mi único problema y a lo único que no le veo sentido fue el uso de las sarisas y la cantidad excesiva de armas largas como lanzas y alabardas para un asedio. Entiendo que si tu adversario es Rohan cuyo fuerte es la caballería, te interesa llevar esta clase de equipo, pero los uruks sabían a lo que iban, sabían que se enfrentaban a soldados resguardados en una fortaleza y el uso de armas tan largas que te restan tanta movilidad lo veo muy poco práctico y totalmente innecesario.

About the attack of the uruks there is not much to comment in my opinion, the deployment was impeccable, my only problem and the only thing I don't see sense in it was the use of the sarisas and the excessive amount of long weapons like spears and halberds for a siege. I understand that if your adversary is Rohan whose fortress is the cavalry, you are interested in carrying this kind of equipment, but the Uruks knew what they were going for, they knew that they were facing soldiers sheltered in a fortress and the use of weapons so long that they take away so much mobility I see it as very impractical and totally unnecessary.

Otra cosa que hubiera facilitado el asedio hubiera sido el construir catapultas para golpear las murallas, material para ello no les faltaba y así no hubieran perdido tantos soldados en las primeras oleadas, si bien es cierto que los uruks superaban cien a uno a sus adversarios esta cantidad de bajas innecesarias fue lo que le costó la victoria pues perdieron ante Gandalf y Ëomer cuando estos llegaron al recate de la fortaleza.

Another thing that would have facilitated the siege would have been the construction of catapults to hit the walls, material for this purpose was not lacking and so they would not have lost so many soldiers in the first waves, although it is true that the Uruks surpassed their adversaries one hundred to one, this amount of unnecessary casualties was what cost them the victory because they lost to Gandalf and Ëomer when they arrived at the fortress.

¿Qué hubiera hecho yo para defender la fortaleza? / What would I have done to defend the fortress?

Por mucho que me cueste admitirlo, esta batalla no hay manera de ganarla por cuenta propia, salvo por un milagro tal cual la llegada de los refuerzos que trajo Gandalf al combate, si hubiera contado con suficiente tiempo hubiera mandado quizás a escavar un enorme foso a las afueras de la muralla exterior para dificultar que las escalas fueran puestas en las murallas, quizás hubiera mandado a modificar las almenas y hacerlas mucho más altas, o poner trampas para dificultar la llegada de los invasores a la muralla pero la verdad que con tan pocos hombres hubiera necesitado muchísimo tiempo de preparación y muchas manos extra.

Hard as it may be for me to admit, there is no way to win this battle on your own, except by a miracle such as the arrival of the reinforcements that Gandalf brought into the fray, if he had had enough time he might have had a huge moat dug outside the outer wall to make it difficult for the ladders to be placed on the walls, Perhaps he would have ordered to modify the battlements and make them much higher, or to put traps to make it difficult for the invaders to reach the wall, but the truth is that with so few men he would have needed a lot of preparation time and many extra hands.

La única opción plausible hubiera sido intentar resistir lo más que se pudiese hasta la llegada de los refuerzos, como dije en general la defensa está muy bien hecha salvo por algunos pequeños detalles, pero desde mi punto de vista no veo manera de salir airoso de un asedio tan bestial y agresivo como el que Rohan tuvo que soportar tras los muros del Abismo de Helm…

The only plausible option would have been to try to resist as much as possible until the arrival of reinforcements, as I said in general the defense is very well done except for some small details, but from my point of view I see no way to get out of a siege as bestial and aggressive as the one Rohan had to endure behind the walls of Helm's Abyss .

La luz del quinto día. / The light of the fifth day.
