Upon his return from the war, he enrolled in the Leon Bonnat academy, and decided that he would dedicate himself to painting.

In 1873 he was admitted to the École des Beaux-Arts. But he soon abandoned his studies, because he did not like the methodology that was implemented there to train pictorial artists.

When his father died, he left his three children a considerable fortune. He took advantage of his inheritance to live comfortably dedicated to painting. He belonged to the Impressionist and Realist movement.

He had a presentiment that he would die young like his father and his younger brother, René, so when he was 30 he wrote his will, in which he left a significant amount of money to help independent artists organize their own exhibitions.

His presentiment was fulfilled, since he died on February 21, 1894, in Gennevilliers, at the age of 45.
