This is indeed a fascinating example of how cancer immunotherapy is moving beyond simply attacking tumor cells. Reprogramming tumor-associated macrophages so that they are supportive of an immune response and using CXCL9 to recruit CD8+ T cells is a clever approach to modulate the tumor microenvironment. The results in mice are encouraging, but it is important to remember the difference between a promising preclinical research and an effective treatment for humans. Long-term safety, toxicity, systemic inflammation, and efficacy are still major concerns that need to be addressed in clinical trials. A very promising approach, indeed!
