Fireballs in the sky.

Fireballs in the sky.

Previously I told you that, according to the media, the number of sightings of meteorites or meteors on the planet has increased; but all this is a real and strange event, in fact, NASA qualifies these weeks of the year as fireball season, it is a mystery, although we have some clues. We know that the American Meteor Society and NASA have analyzed these events in detail and at this time of year there is a real increase of between 10 to 30% in the rate of fireball appearances. This occurs especially around the March equinox and here we come to our first oddity or anomaly.

It turns out that they do not coincide with any star or meteor shower, star or meteor showers are the rivers of remains that a comet normally leaves in its wake, although comets are basically made up of ice, they also have rocks and even traces of metals in their composition. Now, from April 14 to 20, the Earth goes through the Lyrid meteor shower with its peak of activity from April 21 to 22, what we see as shooting stars are what I told you before, very small fragments. Although sometimes among these remains there are larger fragments that cause fireballs and in some cases spectacular fireballs.

But curiously, the fireballs seen these past weeks do not belong to any meteor shower, and here we come to the second oddity or anomaly, the fireballs of these past weeks are not accompanied by small fragments that would make us see a nocturnal meteor shower and this is strange because the normal thing is that for each large fragment there are thousands or tens of thousands of smaller ones. Where are the small fragments?

Third oddity or anomaly, meteor showers, as I said before, come from a single object that is disintegrating, usually a comet, although there are some cases of asteroids, but the meteoroids of the fireball season do not come from a single object, they come from different directions and have different compositions, although be careful, there is a curiosity this time or this year. Among the fragments found this year in Germany and Ohio, it turns out that they seem to come from the asteroid Besta. Besta is the largest asteroid in the solar system, it used to be Ceres, but Ceres has risen in category, it is now a dwarf planet and Besta has risen to the throne of asteroids.

The meteoroids from Germany and the one from the United States came from different directions, so it is suspected that, although they may have come from Besta, they must not have originated from different impact events against Besta, that is, ancient asteroids hit Besta and launched remains into space and part of those remains have ended up here on Earth.

Fourth oddity or anomaly, when the Earth passes through a river of debris, the Moon does too. For good and bad we go through the cosmos together, although in this case, while on Earth a meteor shower is a beautiful spectacle, on the Moon it is a tragedy, there is no atmosphere to slow down or destroy the fragments and they all end up impacting the ground without warning at tens of thousands of kilometers per hour. If you are an astronaut doing your work on the lunar surface and you see how a cloud of dust rises several meters from you, run, run to shelter or you may end up riddled.

The astronauts of the Artemis II mission were able to see a solar eclipse on April 6, 2026 during their lunar flyby. From the perspective of the Orion spacecraft, the Moon came between them and the sun, completely blocking it for approximately 53 minutes. that the moon looked much older, but the most interesting thing was what they saw on that dark surface of the Moon. The moon, blocking the sun, left the solar corona visible, which was already impressive, but what caught their attention and surprised them the most were the flashes of meteoroid impacts on the lunar surface; they saw between four to six flashes.

These flashes were not from grains of rice or objects the size of a €1 coin. We are talking about rocks the size of a soccer ball up to 1 m or a little more approximately, the same size that on Earth would cause a fireball like those seen in recent weeks.

These objects collide at tens of thousands of kilometers per hour and that releases an enormous amount of kinetic energy that produces heat and vaporizes the lunar regolith, transforming it into dust and glass droplets. All over the surface of the moon there is an enormous amount of glass droplets due to these impacts and all that energy generates a brief flash, a normally white or bluish flash, it depends on where it impacts and also on what the object is like, the composition, I mean.

Curiously, almost all the astronauts on the Apollo missions did not see any flashes, except on the last mission, Apollo 17, where they saw three flashes, although that occurred during a meteor shower known as the Geminids, so as far as possible it was logical that they would see that type of impact.

In conclusion, we have first the astronauts of the Artemis 2 mission saw flashes of impacts from objects that could be closely related to the fireballs that were seen here on Earth. Second, our planet seems to cross around the March equinox, an area where there is a somewhat greater concentration, between 10% to 30% greater than normal, of medium-sized remains that we could define as rubble or large rocks, although some may be the size of a car, which have different origins and origins.

Another curious point, strangely the area is clean of small remains. The hypothesis that circulates to explain this strangeness is that those fireballs, those rubble, those medium-sized remains are very old, possibly from asteroids that disintegrated a long time ago and that the dust and small fragments that were in that region that the Earth crosses at this time was also cleaned a long time ago, millions of years ago, by the gravity of the Earth, the gravity of the moon and also by the effect of the solar wind that would end up pushing the small fragments of dust and slightly larger fragments outward, beyond the Earth's orbit.
