From cinema to reality.

The 1984 movie Terminator or the exterminator by James Cameron began a futuristic saga where machines went to war with humans and although it is a movie classic, I warn you that I have to make a bit of a spoiler, since the movie featured the Terminator T800 which was the main weapon of the machines led by an artificial intelligence called "skynet" literally translates as "sky network", perhaps a premonition of the network of satellite constellations that will soon connect the entire planet, but let's leave that reference for another time.

Because Japanese researchers at the University of Tokyo are trying to create a living skin to cover the structure of humanoid robots in order to make the robots look more pleasant to us and avoid the so-called "uncanny valley" effect that was proposed by the professor of robotics Masahiro Mori, who tells us that the appearance of a robot becomes more and more disturbing and threatening to us, as it adapts a human appearance, the more it tries to look like us, the more it causes us a sense of alertness.

The result so far is a finger, an artificial finger that is covered by living skin, that cream-colored texture is alive, it is a living tissue that, according to the Japanese researcher, the robotic finger still has a slightly sweaty appearance, it is not yet perfected is under development.

The skin turns out to be much weaker than the natural skin and unfortunately it does not survive long unless it is supplied with nutrients continuously, so they are thinking of installing a vascular structure to be able to nourish this living skin that the finger would use robotic.

The question would be how much the body's largest organ, which ranges from blood vessels to fingerprints, can replicate.

They have still given dates for when it will be ready, but they calculate that in a few years they could have this type of skin, it can be thought that this, in addition to robots, could also be applied to human prostheses, people who have lost, for example, a hand and want to have an artificial hand, but with a natural skin texture.

I don't think the result has to be too real. I don't think a robot has to look like a human.
For prostheses, of course, that would be an advantage, but otherwise I find it creepy when robots become more and more human.

I think they do it to avoid what is called the "disturbing valley", with respect to the prosthesis I think the same as you, it should be the same or better!
you imagine improving human skin, but there is a long way to go for that.
That is good!
Thank you!
