On January 27, the agency officially unveiled Athena, its most powerful and efficient supercomputer ever built, a system designed to become the digital foundation for the next generation of space, aeronautical and scientific missions. Installed at the Ames Research Center in Silicon Valley, Athena now operates as NASA's main computing engine. capable of handling simulations that until recently would have been simply unfeasible.
And the number is impressive, reaching more than 20 petfops of performance, the equivalent of 20 quadrillion calculations per second, that power allows something crucial for human exploration, replacing very expensive physical tests with extremely precise digital simulations, rocket launches, atmospheric reentry dynamics, next-generation aircraft projects and energy efficiency analysis can now be tested virtually, saving millions of dollars before any part is even manufactured.
But Athena is not only a physics simulator, it also functions as a training ground for advanced artificial intelligence models, capable of analyzing petabytes of data from satellites, probes and scientific missions. Instead of searching for patterns manually, scientists now have AI trained to identify phenomena that might go unnoticed. With this, researchers can, for example, simulate complex atmospheric patterns, predict impacts of solar storms on Earth, or analyze large volumes of planetary data in search of new discoveries.
The name of the system was not chosen by chance, Athena in mythology is a symbol of wisdom and sister of Artemis, which gives its name to NASA's current lunar program, a symbolic connection between computing, exploration and the return of humanity to the Moon and the moment could not be more strategic. As Athena goes into operation, teams at the Kennedy Space Center are approaching a crucial milestone. The final preparations for the test flight of the Artemis 2 mission with the SLS rocket and the Orion capsule go through complete rehearsals, including the simulated launch with supercomputers capable of predicting extreme scenarios.
